Police have been called to some polling stations to move on people who wanted to vote but couldn't because they were still queuing outside at 10pm. In the Manchester Withington constituency, about 200 people were turned away. A spokesman for the returning officer for Manchester said: "The law states that the doors to polling stations must be closed at 10pm exactly, and no-one may be issued with a ballot paper after 10pm."

15 hours to do it and they get locked out...fools.

I went at 8 and it was fairly quiet, but have heard of massive queues at some stations. It does amaze me that people at busier stations leave it so late. shoutIT'S GOING TO BE BUSY!!!!

dont agree - if people are outside the station then let them vote. It shouldn't be a challenge to vote - make it as easy as possible. The fact that some stations have been left open later and some closed on the dot makes it doubly unfair.

I think this voting issue is going to be an absolutely massive controversy. if you combined this, especially if it happened in a marginal seat, with a labour government then we would have a very shaky result.

To be fair if they say I can vote until 10pm, I expect to be able to exercise that option if I choose.

Actually, I agree with Paul.

A significant proportion of this country work in retail. What day is today? That gives all the retailers only two hours to vote.

Are they still 'morons'?

No, thought not.

I don't like all this "blame it on the students" malarky, I live in student city in Plymouth and our polling station had a queue of two of us!

do all those people who work in retail work from the time the shops open to the time they close? No, they work an 8 hour shift so they can vote before work!

(I've done it on a few occasions)
