To me it seems like people voted for the real issues that mattered for them, i.e. money. I said this on another thread, but i'd like to see the demographics of Barking/Dagenham and what percentage of the voters are net contributers to the economy. I suspect that a large percentage aren't, and labour are the safest bet to safeguard their income.

Their vote in Barking and Dagenham was actually 1.7% down from 2005 - thats unbelievable given the amount of campaining they were doing.

Well, that's good news. A shame a Greenie got in, but we can't have everything.

it was a HUGE get out sign by the voters to the BNP.

not only did nick do so badly but so did every single one of their councillors

and the one person to blame?

nick himself.

the fact he stood there drew so much attention to that fact that it was being viewed as a bnp stronghold the voters went out to make sure they werent elected.

but what labour there need to do is back hodge's words with actions and support the local community and not alienate them which is what allowed the bnp in, in the first place.

The message of Barking to the BNP is clear, get out and stay out. You are not wanted here and your vile politics have no place in British democracy.

You say that, and I am no fan of the BNP, but had they not got into power in Barking then the message to the other parties to buck up their ideas wouldn't have been delivered and the people of Barking would have continued to feel like they were not beinf represented. Provided the Barking council now focusses on supporting the local people and addressing their concerns the BNP have served a very useful purpose.

I would agree with that. Similar to the way the Lib Dems gave the electorate a fresher approach to our politics and might have even spurred some people to vote for the first time.

Whoever gets into power now needs to do something about immigration into the UK. I doubt anyone would pay people 50k to leave the country though.

Not sure I understand the point you make but;

1/2 a million voted for them and they had the fifth highest vote.

Why wouldn't they get any attention?

bbc link

I imagine the BNP are pleased, if a change to the voting system comes in, the BNP would have 17 seats in Parliment...

I'm not sure you should read too much into the defeat of the BNP in Barking. I know someone who works at the council and asked them what the BNP councillors were like. Apparently they hardly ever turned up and just generally weren't interested at all (unsurprisingly). I suspect it was their complete ineffectualness in their roles that led to them being booted out rather than the good people of Barking realising what a bright new future Multiculturalism offers them.

I think he meant why have the BNP got so popular to start with - i.e problems with immigration.
