Something dramatic seems to be going on in a remote galaxy:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/science_and_environment...

the article said:
A supermassive black hole may have been observed in the process of being hurled from its parent galaxy at high speed. The finding comes from analysis of data collected by the US Chandra space X-ray observatory. However, there are alternative explanations for the observation. The work, by an international team of astronomers, has been published in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

Normally, each galaxy contains a supermassive black hole at its centre. Given that these objects can have masses equivalent to one billion Suns, it takes a special set of conditions to cause this to happen. The authors believe this could be the result of the merger of two smaller black holes. But there are alternative explanations for the bright X-ray source; it could also be a Type IIn supernova, or an ultra-luminous X-ray source (ULX) with an optical counterpart (which could represent several phenomena).

Simulations using supercomputers suggest that when this happens, the larger black hole that results is shot away at high speed. However, this depends on the direction and velocity at which the two black holes are rotating before their collision.
Provided the scientists have got this right, it seems as though we're observing a freak occurence. A miracle of coincidences, some might say. In the past when such dramatic coincidences have occurred on Earth, such as the miracle of evolution, people of faith have said that this must be the work of a higher power because the circumstances are so unlikely to be caused by chance alone.

Would those same people say that the unlikely factors that have led to this unusual ejection of a black hole from a galaxy are also guided by a higher power? And if they would, what's the purpose of this higher power and why is he bothering to do such dramatic and unlikely things with a galaxy so far away when it doesn't affect us?

Anybody got a phone number for this higher power? This might be a good time to interview him for the background story.

You see the problem with chance is there is always a chance of it happening.

So if they're being honest - they don't really know what it is.

"Black holes may be expelled from their host galaxies after mergers"

shows the ancient were right biggrin

we are a reflection of whats happening in space, browns deficit is the big black hole being flung out, and the merger being the con/dem government

how is evolution a "miracle". quite frankly, it's the opposite IMO.

and as someone else has pointed out, even if the chances are so stupidly low...they are still chances and thus can actually happen.

That reminds me of a program I watched about "Infinity" and the possibility of an infinite universe. It said that everything you can imagine happening is happening right now in this universe if it is infinite! Was a cool program but no idea what it was called now.

I think you'll find it was Family Guy, Series 8, Episode 1, shown last Sunday

"I don't like this universe, Brian"
"Yeah, let's get out of here."

yes Chances are stupidly low but the universe is stupidly big and stupidly old so low probability things do happen, without outside/supernatural influence.

I've no idea what most of you are talking about but it's clear this isn't quite the thought-provoking, high-brow, theological discussion that I envisaged. wink

Pretty much.

But they are willing to guess!
