Not a bad move from Cameron/Clegg, as you may remember, Field was thrown out of the Blair cabinet for being sensible and actualy anting to do the right thing for people in this country.

Also a nice sign that it is going to be an inclusive government and ideas from other people and partys may for once be heard

I think it's a very clever move. Interesting to see if it works.

I think that Clegg and Cameron do actually believe that they will act for the good of the country. So they will do what they think is right to do so. If that means taking unusual steps, then so be it.

Just an oberservation, but so did Hitler.

I'm not comparing them of course. But just pointing out that the road to hell is often paved with good intentions.

How do you work that out? He's only ever been a Labour politician. He admired Thatcher but I have never seen anything to suggest he was ever a Tory.

Was a Conservative Party member in his youth but left the party due to their support of Apartheid.

According to wiki he left due to SA apartheid. (So a very long time ago)

You shoud read some of his articles in the Echo if you get the chance. He comes across very well.

Mr Field certainly seems to be a man who stands by his principles and who is also fairly well rooted in reality - both rare traits in a politician of any party.

That he was out of favour in the recent Stalinist government is also a major plus. IIRC he is one of those who staunchly believes the welfare system has progressed too far from its 'safety net' origins and intentions towards being a lifestyle choice for many.

Godwin's Law in 4, I'm impressed.
