Senior Afghan Government Source said:
His view appears to be that Afghanistan has not changed since the 13th century and it implies that Afghanistan is a tribal and medieval society

Despite the sacrifices of British soldiers and the massive support of the British Government we do not feel that there is a mutual respect. His remarks show a lack of trust.
Well done to the Defence Secretary for telling it like it is. After more than a decade of Labour Political Correctness it is such a refreshing change.

I suspect that Theresa May would be delivering similar home truths if she was not encumbered by Cleggy and the demands of coalition.

That's one way to get us out early and cut the deficit. hehe

Not quite sure they've got a leg to stand on in complaining about his comments.

Crikey there's people half way around the world jumping on the bandwagon now? I guess they'll want compensation or something.

Brilliant, I would love to have seen their faces.

He has said what the majority are thinking, surely?

I've an idea - let them prove how advanced they are.

They could start by showing us the bodies of the young teenage girls who are married off to elderly men who beat/rape them and who escape by setting themselves on fire, and various other nasty ways to kill themselves.

Or perhaps they could show that they are not at all tribal with warlords controlling vast areas of the country.

Will take them but a moment to prove Mr Fox wrong, won't it...........

That's just nonsense, they've advanced in many ways over the years. Not least in horticulture

As always, its an an unnamed source who complained about it. I think what we are seeing here is our old PH friend - what I call the Professionally Offended by Proxy class. They have the equivalent of Guardianistas and Daily Wailers in Kabul too.

He said, as his luxury government limousine whisked him away.

I know a chap - in fact, I'm related to him - who played host to the Afghan President a while back, for a day or so.

Hamid Karzai is most definately not on the record as saying that Afghanistan's greatest tragedy is that they did not enjoy the benefits that the British bequeathed to India and, to a lesser extent, to Pakistan - a tradition of democratic government, and policing by consent of the population. In practice, the ideals have taken a beating in both of those other states, but they remain ideals.

Sadly, Afghanistan didn't benefit in the same way, and hence the "13th Century" comment is probably justified.

I think Fox was silly saying what he did.

Yes we all know it's true but there is no need to upset the Afghan leadership, the warlords and the tribal heads all of whom we depend on to a certain extent in keeping our troops safe over there.

And let Al-Qaeda back in there?

Frankly I could not give a st whether Afghanistan pulls itself out of the 'stone age' but leaving would just create a vacuum which will be filled by international Jihadi groups who can't stand us and wish to harm us.

Iraq has made us a target for these loonies and even though we're no longer there they see us as being responsible for 'the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Iraqis' etc etc.
