With all this talk of job cuts and spending freezes, its surely only a matter of time until people start getting proper hacked off.

When do you think we'll see the riots starting>? Long hot summer, early exit by the England team from the World Cup....

What date until the first real 'headline news' of civil unrest in the UK?

August 9th for me....

It'll never happen, people prefer to sit around tutting and complaining that other people don't storm government.

Well the answer to that is simple if you want to copy and paste the above post and send it to UNITE, they are the experts in this field.

I think the football will keep the great unwashed amused long enough for the government to get most of the pain through with less fuss than expected.

After that though, who knows? If there's one thing that's certain, it is that any riots will be whipped up by parties with a vested interest - Socialist Workers, Unite/Unison, that sort of thing.

Demographics say it won't happen. We are trying to inflate our we out of trouble which hits oldies. Arthritis makes it hard to throw a petrol bomb.

I don't know why, but I noticed more chav scum kicking off than usual on the friday of the elaction results. Don't underestimate the underclasses ability to kick off - to them, casual violence is a way of life, and the nasty toffs who cut their L&B free money will be a target.

And by nasty toff read - people in suits and people in flashy or expensive cars.

Why? They don't have any history of organised violent protest, kicking off after getting pissed on Friday night won't bring down the state.

Benefit spongers will only kick off if the Osbourne/Cleggeron machine gun targetted them.I personally doubt very much it will happen, and I don't think any gvt has the guts to rock the welfare boat.

Not sure about riots as such, but I can see the 'public sector' uniting in protest over their unfair and unjust treatment. Hope they do it near me, Jimmy Carr puts it well: 'off you fk'.

And neither would organised violent protest. I do think that some elements of the unions will stoke up civil unrest or disobedience amongst their members. Add in some EDF or UAF chaps, and I can see it kicking off somewhere, probably a load of kebab shops get done over after Portugal knock us out of the World Cup...

Can't have a proper recession without a nice bit of rioting. We've got to have the rioting - it's just not a recession without it!

How to have a good riot:

Hold large political meeting somewhere with a few important bods there.
Lots of the oppo turn up to demonstrate outside because they've lost their jobs.
It all starts peacefully.
Some swings one at a copper only trying to do his job whilst yelling "Police Brutality".
Cops end up dishing out some brutality - I know I would, fecking hell.
TV pictures unsympathetic to cops. Ringleaders later found but damage already done.
Voters don't tend to like governments who can't keep the peace. Bad for the incumbents.

If was an incumbent government in it's last year and the Euro/UN/anyone else wanted to hold one of those fecking international lets all have a jolly holiday expenses fests in my country I'd tell then to feck right off...

Why is everyone so sure they'll be riots and trouble?

Are you going throw the first stone? Not you? No? Thought not.

From my experince of public sector workers the protest would be made up entirely of 30-50yr old indian women.

Because we have been in the same situation before.

We seem strangely reluctant to learn from history.

It isn't unemployment in itself that leads to unrest. However, unemployment creates an atmosphere where those that want to disrupt society can have influence.

Peopel in the Socialist Worker's Party know that their time has come. They will be busy infiltrating the trade unions. Then they will be telling the workers that they are being exploited by the rich.

I have a suspicion that this has already happened in the BA strike. It seems like UNITE would have reached agreement weeks ago if a single branch (Heathrow based) hadn't blocked every move.

I witnessed this at first hand in the 80's. ASLEF got taken over by a bunch of Trotskyites. Previously, ASLEF had been a relatively moderate union. During the strikes the ASLEF leader never appeared in public without a chap called Steve.

Steve and his cronies used to meet in a house across the road where I lived. These guys were hard core Trotskyites who genuinely wanted armed revolution. Yes, you read that correctly. Armed revolution.

Their plan is a) mass unemployment and destruction of capitalist industries.
b) civil unrest
c) overthrow government and get rid of all hard core capitalists
d) arm comrades in neighbouring countries ....
and so on.

Rioting and civil disorder in the UK in this day and age confused, don't make me laugh.

This is the generation of the Facebook activist and e-petitionist we are talking about here don't you know.

This.

People think that creating a Facebook group is a better way of doing things these days.
