This may be a daft question.
Why is it so hard to find £6bn in cuts when the total spend is over £700bn? Could they not ask all departments to cut back by 1%

Try standing at the kitchen table with a knife, and cutting the tip of your finger off.

It's a question of will. They could balance the budget tomorrow if they wanted.

Or more realistically, stand in your kitchen with your bank statements and work out how to save 1% of your outgoings.

Then next month see where you can trim 25% off your outgoings just to stand still, then next year have a look again and see how the hell you are going to pay off an overdraft that is 25% more than your annual income & the bank manager is breathing down your neck and your wife & kids still want their pound of flesh or you get booted out, oh and you still need to put away a sum that matches your overdraft for your pension.

I don't think I'm too far out.
Send the kids out to work.

But you forgot to mention that the wife goes on to a spa every weekend, buy design clothes all the time, gets week hair and nail appointmments, dines out at the fines t resturants and flys first class every where even if its 100m down the road, simply cause you gave her your credit card... Oh and did I mention the kids are spoilt to fk and have everything they want from your wife again on your credit card.

If you lived a normal life you could cut it all out but now the kids and wife are used to the credit card but the bank wants it back...

The answer is that it is not difficult.

The fundamental problem that they have is that the Tories are always the "nasty" party who cut spending (usually to seek to repay the severe debt that the previous Labour scum have got the country into) and idots seem to believe the Lies told by the Labour Scum that cutbacks mean less nurses/teachers/policemen etc.. rather than the fact that the Civil Service has been bloated by years of recruiting non-job and money was being p****ed down the drain.

if i was the tories and i got booted out at the next election then i'd refuse to stand again and let labour wade deep into their own problems. eventually the country would get the message.
It took about seventy years for the Eastern Bloc countries to "get the message", and their borders were closed for most of it. Not something I'd like to repeat. Though it does seem that the 'EU project' is heading in that direction.
