Young. British. Female. Muslim.

Interesting article...

And yet, while less than 2 per cent of the population now attends a Church of England service every week, the number of female converts to Islam is on the rise. At the London Central Mosque in Regent’s Park, women account for roughly two thirds of the “New Muslims” who make their official declarations of faith there – and most of them are under the age of 30.
Conversion statistics are frustratingly patchy, but at the time of the 2001 Census, there were at least 30,000 British Muslim converts in the UK. According to Kevin Brice, of the Centre for Migration Policy Research, Swansea University, this number may now be closer to 50,000 – and the majority are women. “Basic analysis shows that increasing numbers of young, university-educated women in their twenties and thirties are converting to Islam,” confirms Brice.

I fail to see why a person's religion is relevant to anything really...... I care not if you are Catholic, Muslim, Jew, Buddist or whatever.
Indeed....they're all crazy
Seriously though, as long as someone isn't lauding it over me, I couldn't care less what religion someone decides to follow.

How many of these women change religion for marriage reasons? Nothing wrong with the aforementioned but I'd imagine they account for a large chunk of the total converts and thus are they doing so because they really buy into the ideology or is it simply a matter of convenience?
A woman I used to work with converted to get married, she used to go to a mosque every so often when its was appropriate, she used to sit and read a book, not a religious book, a novel of some sort.. Deep down she was still a Christian really. As others have already done, I'd sugest 9 out of 10 times, it's down to marriage, IIRC when Imran Khan married that very thick Goldsmith woman, she converted to Islam . . . . . . . . . . .or at least the bits that were compatible with her lifestyle
something tells me that since the divorce, bacon sandwiches will have returned to the breakfast menu!

Praise or glorification.
A hymn of praise.
(in plural, sometimes Lauds) A prayer service following matins.
Or do you mean Lording?

I know plenty of muslims who eat bacon butties and drink booze............... Rather a lot of booze as a rule too.........
From what I can gather there is a bit of a North / South thing between the Muslims, I have employed three and they all fasted for ramadan, don't drink and seem fairly devote, bu the one from Kent originally seems to be saying that the Northern ones are more fanatical than the Southern ones. It's quite interesting learning about things like their weddings - over 1000 guests, female does not attend the religious part of the ceremony, lasts a week, dolling out of cash and of course not a drop of booze in any part of it.

One bunch of fairytale nonsense is no better and no worse than the next.
But they're all much, much worse than an absence of fairytale nonsense...Adopting a new set of fairytale nonsense is probably worse than carrying moldering cultural baggage.
We really should be inoculating children against all this delusional illness.

Back to the article in the Times.
It is very interesting reading. However, it is a newspaper article and the headlines are subtly alarmist in suggesting mass conversions to Islam by young white female Brits. As some of the other posters have pointed out the majority of the quoted figures are made up by women having to convert in order to marry. This does still leave a significant minority that have chosen to adopt Islam for other reasons. If you read the full article that includes case histories of a handful of white British women, it's difficult not to conclude that there was definitely something missing in the lives of the women concerned, couple this with an apparent lack of maturity and the adoption of Islam appears to be a akin to teenage rebellion. How much of the appeal is because Islam is so vilified at the moment? When I read the case histories I couldn't help but be reminded of the pasty faced and uninteresting kid at school, who overnight became a Goth or a Punk. Suddenly, they were the talk of the school and elevated to the status of trendy and hip.
The irony as always with Islam is that it is Western liberalism and secularism that allows these individuals to pick and choose their religious identity.
I guess the article makes an interesting change as the normal story is the violence that women experience when they want to leave Islam.
