yikes

I heard a lot of emergency vehicles heading out that way this evening - didn't for a minute think it would be the train.

Apparently minor injuries only fortunately.

The area is prone to a lot of rockfall - possible cause?

Suspect you're right on the probable cause, has it been raining up there?. A bit out of the way for teenage vandals I would've thought.

After the severe winter, there will be lots of rocks which have been loosened, there will probably be more of these incidents where there are steep hills near roads and railways.

Glad that any injuries were minor and I hope the rescue guys can get the train back on the tracks soon, it's a massive detour for those affected!

That part of the line is protected by "Anderson's Piano", but it has been known for rockfalls to bypass the wires.
