EU to vet British Budget?
Discussion
This forum is well known for a bit of EU bashing, so what do people make of this article from the Telegraph:

Or is it simply scare mongering:

Mr Van Rompuy and the European Commission have tabled plans that will require all of Europe’s governments to discuss their budget plans with other EU finance ministers and officials before they presented to national parliaments.
“A government presenting a budget plan with a high deficit would have to justify itself in front of its peers, among finance ministers,” said Mr Van Rompuy.
“There would still be time to adjust plans before the final budget plans are presented.”

But EU officials and French diplomats have insisted that British Chancellors of the Exchequer will be required to give their budgetary plans to the EU not after they are given to MPs in Westminster, "but before or simultaneously”.
From my point of view, assuming that the EU does actually have the right to vet our budget, it makes a complete mockery of our so-called democracy.
Essentially people that have never been elected, or even stood for election by the UK electorate will be directly deciding our fiscal policy.
There's also an element of "Who the f
k do they think they are to be telling us how to run our country?" with the situation the Euro finds itself in.

The govt's first EU test. If they cave in on this, then none of their talk is worth anything.
Hopefully they'll tell Rompey where to go.
This government will not last the term, imo it won't last a year. They won't cave in to Rompey, they will roll over, they have no choice. The government will say they 'are' doing what is in our interests... but they can't. Hopefully they'll tell Rompey where to go.
We needed that Referendum, without it we were sunk.
Hague is all high and mighty and mentions a different type of referendum. Words. The EU controls us, not the other way round.
All those who laughed at Nigel Farage's mocking of dopey Rompey will soon find out just how correct Farage was.

The Telegraph article also said:
While Britain is included in planned new budget “peer review” rules, British governments will escape the sanctions that euro members will face if they ignore EU instructions to change their spending plans.
And that word 'simultaneously' is interesting, as is the mention of 'EU officials and French diplomats'. Are the French running Europe now?

Not to mention that Brussels has never submitted it's books for audit, examination, or scrutiny.
Oh yes they have. BUT the auditors have refused to sign them off because they are like little fairy tales and full of corruption...... And I think that's been the case year on year for over 10 years.IF a PLC did this, it would be out of business. But not so the overlords.

The frauds are breath-taking.
Can I be the first to provide a non-xenophobic, mouth-frothing, ill-thought-out rant of a reply?
Given the crap that many EU finances are in, I think it highly sensible that they review what each nation is doing.
I suspect they have little power over the UK in terms of fiscal control anyway.

Radio 4 Today programme this morning was reporting from 7am that our government were not going to agree to this. End of.

"Given the crap that many EU finances are in" what makes you think that the EU has the ability (let alone the authority) to review and, if necessary, correct the various countries fiscal policies? Given the crap that many EU finances are in, I think it highly sensible that they review what each nation is doing.

It makes sense for the Euro countries to work together on their various budgets, but that doesn't mean the the EU should decide them, nor that they should have anything nothing to do with the UK budget.

You've got to wonder how much stronger a position the UK economy would be now if our budget defecit had not exceeded 3% of GDP.
Its a tough life being a pro-European around these parts.
