WW1 Cemetery, vandalised
Discussion
Seems Frances isn't short on idiots as well. I hope the people who did this eventually wake from their stupor and are haunted by their actions. Disgraceful in the extreme.

ETA: Damn, I've spelt 'cemetery' wrong in the title.

no one else think the joke's actually on the divs who did this? nothing they can say or do their entire pathetic lives will ever diminish what those graves stand for. nazi graffiti on ww1 graves, their lifetime achievement cleaned up and forgotten about in a couple of days, beautiful. anyone who's been there will know what i mean.
nice apology from sarko

Yeah, quickly mended. I hope. The thing that struck me was when I visited an Allied cemetary followed immediately by Langemark, the big German cemetary just out of ypres. So different, very moving. (And I was only 14!)

There are a lot of these type of graveyards in France, often just 2 or 3 people remembered. Most are excellently cared for. Most of the French would happily tear the vandal's testicles off, slowly.
Indeed. I've been to quite a few of the WW1 Cemetaries and they are well kept, spotless in fact, including the German graves. And I agree, there are no shortage of Frenchmen who would do a lot of damage to those who commit such acts. It is a shame that these kind of scum exist in the world, with no honour or sense of decency.

Is that the one with all the giant stone cubes covered in german names? Each one there represents something like 100,000 men or somthing, I was young too when I visited. Amazingly moving trip.
IIRC the archway is inscribed with Allied soldiers - and it is thousands of names (and their age and rank IIRC), it really is quite incredible and moving to see.The German half of the cemetary I think is one side of it and the Allied the other side (but as a poster above, I haven't been since a school field trip when I was 14 - and I nearly got into a fight in the cemetary due to someone being disrespectful).
But there are few cemetaries in that area - one we drove past and didn't have time to stop at, just had rows and rows of white crosses literally as far as we could see. The kids on the coach pretty much shut up as we went past. It really is something that all children should see.

You're on about the Thiepval memorial (I used to live near there) and it's the biggest war memorial in the world - made curiously, from Accrington brick. It's inscribed with the names of sixty-odd thousand soldiers lost (ie. no bodies) in the surrounding fields. Occasionally they find one (last one was a year or so ago) so they are then buried with full honours and the name removed from the Thiepval memorial. The German half of the cemetary I think is one side of it and the Allied the other side (
There isn't a German half to that particular memorial. There's a WW2 cemetary at Ryes near Arromanches which has allied and German dead in it. Very moving.

You could well be right, it was well over 16 years ago when I was there, and we visited a few cemetaries, a few memorials, a museum and even an original trench. There isn't a German half to that particular memorial. But yes, the whole day was very moving, and it was interesting to see how quiet most of the kids were on the return journey.
