Well according to this report. (I know it's the mail)
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1286664/Ch...

Daily Mail said:
Incapacity benefit will be axed within four years under plans to crack down on the workshy.

All 2.5million claimants will be removed from the scheme by 2014, Chris Grayling said yesterday.

The work and pensions minister told MPs they will be moved on to other benefits, where they will be under stricter requirements to find work or be given greater support to do so.

Mr Grayling said tackling the handouts culture and offering more help to the most vulnerable would be a key priority. He revealed that the process of assessing whether incapacity benefit claimants are fit to work would begin next April.

During the general election, David Cameron pledged within three years to test every recipient on their ability to return to work.

The Conservatives believe that around 400,000 of the country's 2.6million incapacity benefit claimants are incorrectly claiming the handout and are able to take up employment.

However, experts say that this figure is a serious underestimate. Official figures suggest that only one in six adults claiming incapacity benefit may be entitled to do so.
However I thought that the previous administration had made similar noises back in 2005. http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/news/article-1630653...

So is it just the new boys telling us what we want to hear, or are CMD and Cleggy's mobs actually going to do something about it this time?

I really hope that they do.

I was under the impression that incapacity benefit had already stopped in 2008 and replaced with 'Employment Support Allowance'.

Maybe that's part of the problem - one type of benefit stops and another 2 or 3 appear.

Please dont confuse "talking about" with "actually doing"! Only time will tell if things are actually done!

With this and other noises on HB it looks like benefits will not be immune from the coming cuts.

A bit more effort weeding out the liars would be helpful and ensure that funds are available to those who really need it.

I couldn't agree more.

Time all those with yuppie flu, stress and glassbacks were forced to work for a living. Although it might not leave them with enough time to spend down the pub, or on lamebook.

Sticks.

Hmm, so how are you going to make employers take them, when right now there are more applicants than jobs?

Plenty of streets need sweeping / gutters clearing / council fence painting / street litter picking needs doing.

They are already being paid a "wage" - let them work for it for a change.

I keep reading councilas are cutting jobs. So they should make more people redundant so they can take more people on from benefits? Don't know why they haven't thought of it before.

First we need to create the jobs for these people to do. Given the current government's intended cuts to public services I expect finding jobs for anyone to do will not be easy.

Assuming 'we' refers to the private sector - where some are indeed providing work for others even at this time - and not government created non-jobs, then there's more hope than under the previous lot. How much hope and how many jobs remain to be seen, but with the NI-hike (aka tax on jobs) killed off again it's better than before.

Why would they replace anyone - the benefits people are already paid and can do all sorts of public services that are not being done because of lack of staffing.

That won't work either, the employer will be faced by a work shy sofa ornament or a hungry foriegner.
All this will do is do force scumbags to attend interviews......for which they will, of course, claim expenses

The reality is anyone who is forced off incapacity benefit ( does this even exist isnt it esa now ) will be put onto jobseekers allowance. To do this will involve huge cost as everyone goes to the private company in charge of this for various assessments and then the various appeals.

It needs stemming by the doctors. Its only their sick notes that allow people to claim as I understand it but they are in a tough position.

There are some pretty obvious ways to reduce benefits but it wont be easy.

There is an element of this that can be stopped without the impacts mentioned. For example I know someone who is paid incapacity, he doesn't want it, all he wanted was a blue badge because he was on crutches. The wouldn't give him a blue badge without paying him incapacity.... Now he has had an operation, is back to full health and can't find a way to stop them paying it.

Meanwhile an elderly couple of my acquaintance are get paid attendance allowance to look after each other. How's that work then? Particularly bearing in mind they are not short of money.

I thought the jobs you listed were mainly done by those that had been sentenced to do community service, or with regard to litter picking, by local volunteers.

Probably are - there is still plenty of room for more - I can name several roads round here that need attention and the grass doing alone within a mile radius.

It's not like there is a shortage of stuff to do when you have a "free" workforce - all they need is a binbag and a litter collecting grabber and off they go. Or a paintbrush and some paint to clear the graffiti - loads of underpasses etc that I can think of again in less than a couple of mile radius from me that need doing.
