Hi all, was`nt quite sure where to post this but was just wondering what everyone thinks of the envioromental disaster in america. Now i dont by any means know all the facts but it seems to me that Britain seems to be taking alot of flak in the form of BP which is by all accounts these days mostly owned and run by americans, tbh alot of the stuff spewed out by the american government seems quite slanderous. Is this fair ?.

As i said i dont really know any facts but i`m curious to know what everyone thinks about the situation, cheers stu

The Yanks have a problem. BP.
The "British" to be precise.

It's funny - everyone said Obama was going to be the greatest think since Kennedy: in actual fact I reckon he's turned out an utter wker.

Anyone see the boss getting grilled in front of the senate last night? - Object example of how not to loose your cool. One of the women questioners was trying to ask smart questions but was all nervous and kept fluffing her words - yet he just kept calm and collected and giving answers.

I watched this last night...and wondered who (if anyone) had been pressuring BP to get more oil, cheaper. There must have been some of that going on. Also, surely if the Yanks were so keen on getting cash to fix oil/environment dramas they'd levy a tax on the fuel they use..? Nah, easier to give someone else st for it...and the BP guy looked like he knew fine well he was the scapegoat.

Incidently, all those senators giving him the guilt trip about 9 people dying. I wonder how many of them voted in favour of the wars that have killed hundreds (thousands..?) of young Americans..?

The US seems to be on a mission to lose friends at the moment; condeming Israel, lashing out at BRITISH Petroleum. Is this wise, Mr President..?

The US are happy to guzzle the stuff by the gallon for next to nothing though arnt they - and didnt it turn out that it was a US contractor who caused it anyway?

It's like they think BP are not fixing it on purpose - yes, they really want to be pissing away billions of pounds rolleyes

Not excusing it - it isnt good, but typical US reaction. News the other night had a US women on the beach crying wildly "my kids wont have a beach to grow up with"

Surprised they dont get Team America in to sort it.

Interesting also to note that there were three other companies involved, only BP is getting it in the neck yet it was the other three actually responsible for the drilling. Apparently there were 7 safety devices in place, all with a chance of failing, for all 7 to fail at the same time was about 1 chance in 99,000. BP 'owns' the oil therefore it is their fault.

I LOLed.

BP and Mr. CEO are being villified by America. Typical yank reaction, to blame everyone but themselves. Quintessential scapegoat.

I know next to nothing about what has gone on to be honest, just what's been on the news but from what I've seen there has just been a typical American reaction to a situation: something has happened which we don't like - blame someone, shout about it very loud and take it as a personal affront to America. I actually heard someone on the radio saying that it was comparable to 9/11. Pardon? I wasn't aware this was a deliberate terrorist attack with the intention (and effect) of killing thousands of people.

As has been said, Halliburton were the contractors performing the drilling, and in these days of health and safety and litigation I can't imagine BP were authorising someone with a Tesco power drill and a snorkel to sit on the sea bed and see what oil they could find. However it's easier to get the support of the easily swung American populace if you tell them it was someone else's fault, damned Brits. I was wondering yesterday if there'd be such outrage if it was a North Sea rig that this had happened to? I very much doubt it.

So the rig wasn't American owned, operated by Americans, and let down by American safety equipment? That seems contrary to what's been in the press. Do tell.

If my memory serves me right, when the Ekofisk Brave blow out (1970's North Sea) happenned Phillips/Conoca (USA) actually let it burn for a month while they argued with Red Ader about the cost of putting the fire out.
I'd also like to know what share holders think about agreeing to finace a clean up at 20B which is 30 times greater than their legal liability, and what BP's insurers think obout admiting liability.
Watching CNN today and beaches were deserted because of fear, no oil present, perhaps CNN have contributed more to the economic downturn in the area than BP?

Absolutely - looking at the tracts of world fked up by the Americans, Bhopal (never sorted), tens of thousands killed in Iraq in a war started illegally for oil. And oh - gosh! Who is one of the major contractors out in Iraq (who I seem to recall having a lot of US govt influence (wasn't there a documentary on how Iraq was divided up between US companies?))...? It's Halliburton! Wahaaay! And who isn't going to get bum raped for shoddy practices - yep! Halliburton who obviously had fk all to do with it - BP were responsible for the way they operate.

I've always been very pro-American - now they can just go and fk right off! That president is media grabbing, soundbite uttering tit.

Dunno about that one, i wouldnt have thought Schlumberger would have organised their own chopper to get the guys off, more likely would be just telling the guys to wait till the next scheduled flight.

On some of the other points, yes it was a Transocean rig, and the cementers were Halliburton, but the BP company rep is the man in charge making the decisions onboard, so it may be that if it was his decisions that was part of the issue then that may be why BP are getting so much stick.

Obama has played the situation completely wrong. He attacks BP openly when they are trying to do something about it. There are many levels of staff involved some of which are not working underneath the primary contractor (BP). Perhaps if Mr President pulled his head out of his ass for just a moment and instead of concentrating on throw away lines to bolster the support from the feeble minded actually backed BP for the time being whilst everyone is trying to clean it up we just might get something done.

Discussions about liability are way in the future and as Alan Sugar commented today 'will be months not days in the making' when the CEO, CTO and board of BP have had a chance to review all the data and the idiots in congress have calmed down a little bit. The effort should be focused for clean up, not blame at this point in time.

The US needs to understand that they are under scrutiny from the rest of the world and not many people are enjoying the childish antics of what is supposed to be a super power.
