According to BBC Radio 4, regional cabinet meetings cost around £200k.

So what exactly is the point?

What can they decide in Bradford that they couldn't in London

Was hoping such gimmicks would have ended after getting rid of Gordon's lot but obviously not.

Not really.

I think it's very important for our ruling elite to get outside Westminster and see the rest of the country they run.

One of the big problems we've had, supposedly solved with the Welsh and Scottish Parliament, is that people in far edges of the country do feel a bit out of it. That London dictates, and they have to follow.

No wonder people feel that Govt has no meaning to them.

So, I'm going with this being a good idea. And £200k is peanuts really.

As above, I think it is partially to show that they actually are aware that there is an area of England which exists outside of London. But it is still a lot of money just to prove a point.

Must admit Call Me Dave adopts a good concerned I'm on the verge of tears when some member of the public gives him a good bking. Like when the woman was saying nobody shops in Bradford because it's a hole.

The interview she gave afterwards was a bit unfair from what I saw as she was pointing out lack of cohesive thinking and waste of money by the previous incumbents surely.

Anyway agreed that anything which gets them out of the Smoke and connecting with real people and not just pre-briefed on-message party twonks.

My wife has just seen Ian Duncan Smith on the same train back to London. Obviously just a half day meeting!

Interesting to see he is travelling standard class on the Leeds to London KW train.

I cannot imagine Lord Two Jags Fatkhunt of Hullshire doing that.

IDS is ex-SAS. I'm surprised he's not returning to Whitehall by bivvying down in a ditch during the day and yomping 50 clicks a night through the wilderness.

George Osborne is sat next to him.

I have asked wife to get them to autograph a tenner (while it is still worth anything!) - but this will really piss her off, as she is an incurable champagne lefty.

That is standard rail travel, isn't it?

Let's see if they are still doing in in a couple of years. It all smells a bit gimmickry to me.

Not quite as though it's something he proudly pioneered from 1997 though is it? hehe

I can't see the point of this. If their aim is to somehow connect with areas of the country, they would be better off having a Meet The People type visit. This was just a meeting, and I doubt that any decisions they made would have been different because it was in Bradford.

I attended a business leaders lunch in Bradford yesterday. Nick Clegg, George Osborne, Vince Cable and Eric Pickles were there, plus about 20 of us. They had their cabinet meetin in the morning, and then went seperate ways, very much in the 'meet the people' kind of way. It was a very interesting experience, and I have to say, these guys gave a very down to earth appearance. We had lunch at Mumtaz and sat around a large table for about 45 minutes taking about business support and the LEPs that are coming in to replace the RDAs. On most points, I agreed with their insights and strategy.

Clegg and Osborne left together to go and get the trian. They had a very modest entourage and it was kept fairly low key (apart from loads of bloomin' outside broadcast vans that assembled outside of teh restaurant). This was all from 12.30 to 2.30 yesterday, I got my 'invite' to go at 10.30 and most other people only heard late Friday afternoon.

I say fair play to these guys. No 2 Jags here (Cameron had the blue one with him, but did not come to our meetng). One of the compliments I could issue is how these guys keep their engery going from meeting to meeting to meeting all day long. I would not be able to do that without A. looking knackered B. being knackered and C. losing my temper.

Weird and surreal day. I had different plans for lunch and the afternoon when I got out of bed yesterday morning, then saw myself on the 6 O'clock news and Newsnight in the evening. I went to bed thinking "how did that that happen then?".

We don't agree with Gordon Brown for bringing it back, so much as we disagree with David Lloyd George for scrapping it in the first place wink

IDS was Scots Guards.

Davis was 21 SAS according to Wiki.
