It's the only way to reduce the amount the government spends to somewhere near to the amount it brings in through taxation................. no doubt the half wits who vote labour will blame everybody but themselves rolleyes

At least these cuts may save us from the IMF being called in smile

Sadly, I do know a Labour voter. If she loses her job through these cuts she will blame the Conservatives.

Which kind of proves she deserves to be sacked if she's that dense.........

But why 40% across most departments, much better to be 100% for some and relatively unscathed for the essential stuff, or am I missing something?

presumably all depts must serve some purpose. and the wasters MIGHT feel 40% whereas the more essential ones will be lower.

guess it is reffering to the depts listed here:

Well, hopefully, they won't remove 40% of the hull. Oh, wait, you meant...

The Conservatives (oh and their LibDim sidekicks) look as though they might be effective at repairing the economic damage but the real battle is getting the message across to the electorate. Ironically what we actually need is a dose of the vindictiveness and single-minded determination to dish the dirt that only Labour seems to possess - only then could we have a hope of utterly destroying the Labour party and ensuring enough people never vote for them again. Unfortunately the task is even more difficult than fixing the economy - the cancer in this country is close to terminal, this may only be a temporary remission.

Considering the growing unrest in the country (away from cloud cuckoo PH land)over the lack of employment and the knock on social effects that are ALREADY forming, then 40% "cuts" would in effect kickstart a VERY nasty backlash.....

And then Labour will "come to the rescue" at the next election cry

Indeed. Rescue...with the same medicine that caused the current national crisis of near-bankruptcy.

Why is it that people fail to see how cuts which bring the finances back into balance relate to spending that was unaffordable in the first place, it's actually reducing reckless and unaffordable spending but opponents use emotive terminology that ducks the cause. Doubtless it won't be described in those terms by most of the left leaning media.

As health is protected, while education and defence are being spared the worst, what unaffordable spending is suddenly affordable? None of it.

Although I find the scale of necessary cuts alarming (they're going to have to close whole departments and programs, not just tinker) one thing seems certain...

...if we spent our way into trouble we're sure as hell not going to spend our way out if it!

So presumably, given other current threads describing how clever the electorate is, any backlash will be directed at Labour for spending money the country never had then borrowing to spend more - and doing very little if anything of value with other people's as yet unearned money and the borrowed money.

I'm not sure about that, I've heard reports that "the people" understand that the cuts are necessary, the only people who are angry are the dodgy benefit claimers and they are only "protesting" on facebook.

Its been a common ploy for those opposed to any form of cuts to try to hit front line services first so that opposition levels rise. Anybody remember Derek Hatton's mob in Liverpool in the mid-1980 as an example?

Keynesian economic theory served the world economy pretty well after the depression (although it was helped out by a major war) but the spending concentrated then on major infrastructure projects.

Labour appeared to think you could spend your way out of a depression by creating jobs such as "Deputy Heads of Compliance" and "Performance Management Analysts" on telephone number salaries. Those are the areas where the first P45s should be handed out
