Why this isn't on the front page of the BBC I'm not sure, but saw this logging in to my email:

http://www.mail.com/intl/Article.aspx/world/europe...

BBC has this on the NI section, but nothing on the front page:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/northern_ireland/106123...

82 officers injured, three shot, one hospitalized after a shotgun to the chest, one after being hit in the head- the BBC say by "a lump of masonry", others report by "a paving stone dropped from a rooftop". A hijacked bus with a fake bomb and a hijacked train which they attempted to set fire to. That's some pretty big st in only two days.

A recession that's biting quite hard, and a 'tory government' in Westminster sets a nice backdrop for a return to the bad old days of the troubles doesn't it.

As long as it doesn't come over here, who cares?

They shouldn't clean up after riots, let them wallow in their own filth.

'bout time these stupid troublemakers grew up if you ask me. Religion, with all its believers and perpetuators, has a lot to answer for, not just in Northern Ireland neither.

Just can't believe that here we are in the year 2010, and people still use their belief in the skypixies as an excuse for violence and/or political gain.

F**king get a life.

I have to say anyone who took part in these marches know what has happened in the past.

It is a shame that so called grown-ups can behave in such a way and think it is normal.

Shocking behaviour.

It's an annual ritual. I don't think it is particularly worse than in previous years.

Well done.

Have you applied for any jobs in the Diplomatic Service recently?

The divisions are along sectarian lines but it's more about tribalism and the haves and have nots AFAIK.

I wholeheartedly agree. Still, incredibly childish though and I do think that religion and sectarianism are used as an excuse for a bit of violence.

With respect Eric, this was a bit of tongue and cheek. But lets face it, diplomacy really has had little effect in how many years the thugs have been causing the trouble.

Your correct it hasn't been, although there seems to be a higher number of police injured. But I think the problem there lies with the new Chief Constable, you just don't get the impression he realises what he dealing with here.

Different era - different generation of hooligans. It's a family tradition.

What they should do is allocate a "Riot Field" and let the opposing sides have at each other to their hearts' content whilst the rest of the normal population goes about their daily lives.
Why, it might even become a televised sport with points awarded for best petrol bomb or most imaginative insult.

Isn't that how the original Battle of the Boyne was organised - pick a field, any field.

I thought that's more or less what they used to do at Portadown every year?

There seems to have been a consensus between media and government that reporting disturbances in NI was 'unhelpful'; I think the result is that when events do reach a level that cannot go unreported nationally the effect is that they appear to be a bolt from the blue.

And it also depends very much on what else is happening in the news.
