"The invasion of Iraq "substantially" increased the terrorist threat to the UK, the former head of MI5 has said.

Giving evidence to the Iraq inquiry, Baroness Manningham-Buller said the action "radicalised" a generation of young people, including UK citizens.

As a result, she said she was not "surprised" that UK nationals were involved in the 7/7 bombings in London.

She said she believed the intelligence on Iraq's threat was not "substantial enough" to justify the action."

So no WMD and it increased the risk to the public. Anyone want to defend the Iraq was now?

If the Iraq conflict has put the general public at greater risk then the same can be said for Afghanistan.

He'll be telling us next that declaring war on Germany in 1939 incresed the chances of a Heinkel bombing my grandad's shed! biggrin

Im sure Muntu, Jimbeaux et al can give you pages and pages of great reasons for the Iraq War and why it was such a brilliant plan.

Too right.

Then there was the business of the way Saddam treated his subjects. And the potential Nuclear build-up between Iran and Iraq. We'll never know about that last one.

The intelligence was manipulated by the elected government and not faulty, or an error on the part of the intelligence services.

Clearly MI5 will have had a view, but it is important to remember that their view is not specifically of the world, since their duty is to protect interests at home.

If this is a criticism of the Iraq war, then had come from MI6 then the view would have been more credible.

no, what's really hilarious and also quite tragic is how wrong you have been all along.

How wrong I have been? That is your own opinion; you are welcome (and encouraged) to keep it. hehe

Come now chaps, lets not turn this into a pantomime thread smile

Yes, its pretty bloody obvious to most of us that what Manningham-Buller said is bang on the money, but it doesn't change the fact that its nice to hear it being said at the inquiry.

She speaks sense, something Tony and co couldn't do at the time.

Her testimony should be seen for what it is, a damning indictment of the UK's handling of the "threat" of Islamic terror. Her testimony vindicates what many of us thought all along, that our "handling" of Islamic terror was more a stoking of Islamic terror.

We got pulled along on the coat tails of the US and the actions of our respective governments gave home grown nutters a reason to attack us, and gave BinLaden the Iraqi Jihad.

It's just a shame that NonDomTony will probably never be brought to book over this decidedly dark period in our recent history.

What comes to mind is less that we incited the homegrown nutters and more of why such people are allowed to flourish and practice their hatemongering in the first place. Those types will always find a reason to manifest their hate.

shameful deflection and denial of any responsibility there, but to be expected.
Ok, what do you think about the MI5 boss comments?
Come on you usually have so much to say- you are strangely muted on this thread.
Try to convince us that she is not qualified to make those comments perhaps?

But Jim is it not tempting to take the reasoning just a step further and wonder why those people hate the West. It's not something without cause you know.

I am on the road, thus being muted. I feel she, like anyone else, has an opinion. I would challenge her to prove it. She brought the matter up, therefore it is not secret. Explain herself. While she is at it, let her explain why a subversive group of hatemongers are allowed to live and carry on their activities in her country under her watch. These groups don't become this way overnight, there are signs. BTW, Peter, try to not be so arrogant.....it's so expected.

The post is about nutters in your own country.....they are in the "West". If they hate it, the exit is clearly marked.

It's not any less 'credible' because if comes from MI5 instead of MI6. It would be less credible if it came from a swampy or a politican geting his intel from the agency (like in the build up to war) someone with bias as opposed to direct from the intel agency itself.
