Bugger. frown I remember Big Beach Boutique had a similar problem - I think they expected 100k to turn up and 250k turned up in the end. IIRC only one died, though.

Horrible. I can't understand how these situations develop, but this is why big crowds scare me a bit, the loss of control. Please, any further witty posters, just don't!

Look at how many years love parade has been taking place, never has this happened before.

Still one of the best dance events on the planet but I think some things will change now which is a real shame.

I've just got back from the prodigy gig on mk and tbh that was a bugger to get out from!.

And they scare me too. It never ceases to amaze me how humans in large crowds appear to be little better than sheep.

Poor sods.

I was at Donnington in 1988 when two people were killed by a crowd surge. I had been close to the front shortly before it happened and my mate and I decided it was getting a bit hairy and headed back out, a very frightening experience. I feel very sorry for everyone involved in this.

Animal instinct kicks in. Fight or flight etc. Often that can mean at the cost of someone else's safety.

Confusion generally reigns. People aren't often aware of the tragedy that can be unfolding just 10 yards from where they are standing.

Sad news and no doubt the organisers of this event will have serious answers to give as to what went wrong.

That was mad. Apart from the biggest bar queues ever seen, I did leave a few minutes beofre it finished, didn't fancy the squash to the exits.

What was it that caused the panic in the tunnel anyway? Have they figured that out? What a horrid thing to happen. frown

Did I hear it correctly on the radio that between 1 and 1.5 million people were there ? Sounds a huge number to try and control, if you can even try and begin to control a huge number like that.

Genuinely feel sick after reading that, I remember being at the front in Reading 2000 when there was a crowd surge, it was the most terrifying thing I've ever experienced and it must of been mild compared to this.

Used to be held in Berlin, but there were loads of problems over who should pay for the policing/clean up etc. So for the last couple of years it's been held at this venue, which is some sort of industrial site that is totally fenced of and the only way in is under these bridges. I believe it is still a free events so they have no idea of how many will turn up. This didn't matter when it was on the streets of Berlin.

I watched some of the event on one of the German satellite channels, They didn't seem to show anything about the incident till after 5pm, where they then started to show lots of ambulances and 6 or 7 helicopters lined up on an adjacent road. Not being able to understand German I had no idea what they were saying.

According to an article in the Telegraph, they closed one end of the tunnel and told people to turn round and go back out the other end!

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/g...

I can't believe that they thought that it was a good idea to have such a huge crowd heading through a tunnel into the venue. If it's correct about closing one end of the tunnel off then I'm gobsmacked at someone's stupidity.

Terribly sad, whatever the cause.

20 dead R.I.P. , 500 injured,

organizers / Police / city authorities shuffle responsibilities "no it wasn´t me" .

State attorneys are taking up investigation which will take a long while.

Seems that city of Duisburg wanted to have the LP without having the proper pace to hold it,

but everybody thought "well it´s a risky thing but keep fingers crossed and nothing will happen."

Locals were posting months ago that having only ONE access road was not enough,

and that access road routing through a tunnel was disaster waiting to happen.

Local vice-chef of police strongly opposed holding LP there

and was promptly sacked by publicity-hungry mayor, etc etc etc.
