World Sauna Championships tragedy
Discussion
A bit of a bizarre newsflash, the World Sauna Championships in Heinola Finland has been stopped due to tragedy. Two of the six finalists collapsed, a Russian man later died, while the other competitor, a Finnish man was taken to hospital badly burned.
The starting temperature is 110C and every 30s half a litre of water is poured on the stove, the competitors had been inside the glass walled sauna for six minutes when the referees stopped the final.

Well, I have seen a couple of these events in the past and the winners look utterly shattered - I've seen them have to be helped out etc... So no great surprise that someone was going to die, frankly, looking at the "fitness" of the competitors I am only surprised is it not a more common occurance.

110 is a bit on the warm side, 90 is quite nice though
for how long?
waht is the boing point of blood?

Oh, and don't forget, large amounts of beer and vodka

No idea about the boiling point of blood, but comparing to the cooling system on a car the construction is not that different, around 120 would be a guess.
Believe it or not, but I'm not really a chef either
Now that I actually think about it, as a kid I had a fever of 41, nearly killed me that did, so a blood temperature of 120 would more than likely finish the job. In my defence though, the functionality of the blood/heart system isn't that different from a cooling system in a car, or is it?
It probably is...

i guess you are right, the blood does have significant functionality as a temperature regulation system. Think about how your veins dilate and contract depending on if you are hot or cold. Some animals that live in very cold environments also have heat exchanger type setups with their blood vessels so blood returning from their feet (say) is warmed up by blood heading to them.
On one of those dodgy web sites I keep getting links for from my mates there were pics of the two people streight out of the sauna.
Don't ask I will not link it on here don't even know why I looked.
Now I am not a doctor or a sauna expert but.... There were lots of clues as that would indicate to the laymen that this HAD gone wrong.
Unbeliveable! I am not even going to describe how they looked thats how bad it was.
Why is was not stopped I do not understand. completely nuts
