The Pakistan Disaster.....

Not wanting to stir up a hornets nest, but with a massive demand for monetary aid, which is
justified there's an opportunity to sort out a nagging problem

IMO if there is any aid given it should be on the understanding that the
government of Pakistan should make more strenuous efforts to identify the terrorist elements
within their borders.

What does the PH collective think of this idea?

Pakistan is still in the dark ages. hard luck to them. we all started off on this planet at about the same time. we have done well , they have mud and curry. No real infrastructure etc , let them sort out their own mess and start to join in the modern world. Their Government has plenty of money invested in nice houses around the world and billions stashed away in accounts.

Attaching strings to an offer of help isn't all that charitable, is it? I bet almost all of those people currently suffering starvation, disease and lack of clean drinking water are basically just ordinary people wanting to get on with their lives without being washed out to sea, blown up by nutters or their own government, or anything like that.

They're just ordinary farmers, office workers, factory workers, etc... with families to feed and livelihoods that have been ruined.

How would you feel if Britain suffered some massive catastrophe, but then the world's governments didn't send aid because they didn't like our government's policies?

Don't bother attaching strings to the aid; it's uncharitable, and anyway most aid does not reach the people who really need it. And, as others have pointed out, Pakistan isn't that poor.

Send that money to Help For Heroes, and try to sort out our foreign and immigration policies so we aren't making more enemies, especially not on our own soil.

they say over 2500 people have died in the Pakistan floods so i'm willing to collect 2500 immigrants and send them over there to replace the dead ones.

Sorry but I feel that:

Pakistan has the money but doesn't wish to spend it on their poor - if they don't care, why should we ?

If we were in a similar situation would they help us - I doubt it

Charity starts at home once we have solved our problems we can sort everyone elses out.

Most of these posts echo my feelings on the flooding but the human cost is very very sad indeed, something that shouldn't be overlooked. 'We' as in globally need to make the Pakistani government understand that outside aid will only be given after their own efforts has been exhausted.

Are they? I acted for an old boy who moved in a year or two back and he was like a child he was so excited to be going to spend his last few years there! I know it isn't exactly the Ritz but didn't think it was that bad.

I do get rather agitated about things when a relatively rich country suffers some form of disaster and every man and his dog decides we should send them the equivalent of £400 a head in aid.

Don't get me wrong, send resources, equipment and experts, sell their government surplus tents, grain and stock at 'cost' prices but in the nicest possible way UK Plc isn't exactly flush itself atm. Lining the pockets of each of the 43 'government officials' that you know the cash will pass through before it gets to where it should be spent is not the way forward.
