The water around NY is too cold to keep the hurricane strength up, so it would arrive with much reduced power.

Follow it here.... http://www.stormpulse.com/
They're expecting it to hit Nova Scotia with winds around 145kph, and the water in the Bay of Fundy is unnaturally warm ATM over 3°C warmer than usual at the start of September............

It would have to take a (so far) unpredicted jog to the west to direct strike NYC. At current tracking the coast will get the left side of the hurricane which is, normally, the side with reduced winds.

interestingly the NHC are predicting it will remain a major hurricane all the way up to Rhode Island where it is downgraded to just 'hurricane'.
I wonder how many reporters Fox news are going to throw at this one, it makes my day to see some poor reporter standing in the middle of a deserted street trying to do a news report in 100mph winds, comedy gold i tell ya.

Why have the Canadians got a hurricane centre? Seriously...?

Hmmm - don't these NW coast hurricanes and storms normally get a lift on the jet stream over to Blighty? sonar

NASA DC-8 was above the Hurricane's eye 26minutes ago and reports the eye wall has lost structure since yesterday.

And this is a photo taken earlier of Hurricane Earl's eye was taken from the HDVis camera on the underside of the Global Hawk aircraft during the morning of Thursday, Sept. 2 at 13:05 UTC (9:05 a.m. EDT). The Global Hawk captured this photo from an altitude of 60,000 ft. (about 11.4 miles high).

Most of the hurricanes in NS usually just give a stiff blow but they also can do serious damage.....

In 2003 a hurricane Juan hit Halifax NS and devastated the centre of the town, thousands of mature trees lost in a superb park, electricity out, houses badly damaged, and lots of boats sunk. MY salesman there had his yacht (which he'd pulled out of the water beforehand) thrown over the yard, over the railway lines and through the front room of a house the other side of the Bedford Highway, and it was not a small boat!
