According to the deputy PM, increasing aid will:

1 - reduce the risk of terrorism on UK streets and,
2 - reduce the number of asylum seekers in Britain.

fk off Nick, instead of increasing the money we give how about we make sure the money we currently give is spent efficiently and not stolen or wasted by corrupt third world officials.

Hyperbole and a bit of elbows out posturing to remind people they exist as part of the coalition.

Just remember, it's not just about the size of the budget, it's about what the budget is spent on.

If the money is spent wisely on things that benefit Britain and that generates exports and improved balance of payments, that's good.

The natural worry is that the overseas aid budget will be run like most government run institutions - inefficiently with objectives that the majority of voters don't really agree with.

why on earth is this ringfenced? if its all bribes and the income to uk firms is more than the cost then fine but if its just sponsoring crap that doesnt work surely this cannot be a priority.

as for stopping terrorism have they considered not bombing countries and using that money to help them instead?

Aid funds corruption and terrorism. We shouldn't give a penny out IMO. We are a country not a charity.

Indeed, I was curious as to how long it would take to kill off the deficit if we stopped this for a few years.

Well we've sent billions of pounds worth of lead, copper, DU, High Explosives, and Steel (to list just some of our generous donations) to Iraq and Afghanistan, and they're still not thankful.

Aid has it's use but we should adopt the Chinese model where aid is used to gain influence and strengthen economic ties. Give millions to an African regime so long as they buy our military hardware and let our companies in to drill for oil etc. i.e. Start using aid as a pseudo bribe or kickback.

Plus do you remember the stories last year/earlier this about how much the officials in the various admin branches were spending on entertaining, travel and general jollies? Not to mention their salaries, pension deals etc.

Even though the taste in cars could be a lot worse, this £5m lot was bought with help from Brits' cash via our funding of the EU and its handouts to tinpots.
