The moment a circus performance went horribly wrong for a Ukrainian lion tamer has been caught on video by a terrified onlooker.

The footage shows a lion roaring, lunging and striking, before another joins in - biting down on the trainer's left arm.

Tamer Oleksie Pinko is knocked to the ground as he desperately tries to herd the big cats out of the ring.

At one point, one of the lions almost leaps out of the net surrounding the ring and into the crowd.

Mr Pinko was taken to hospital to undergo emergency surgery and is said to be in a stable condition.

The footage was shot by US tourist Doug Sheperd, who was at the show in the Ukrainian city of Lviv with his wife and two children.

Mr Sheperd told CBS News: "I've been to some great circus performances there.

"My son said. 'I don't want to go the circus ever again,' and I don't blame him."
I like the 'La. la, la, la, lah, lah!" you can hear in the background. hehe

Looks like they ignored the other guys and just went for the trainer. Finally had enough of being tormented. Good for them.

Do you have any basis for the allegations of being tormented?

Are you just assuming there's some sort of natural justice involved because of some deep rooted psychological trauma that mean you instinctively distrust humans but trust animals?

Because it's such a natural thing for Lions to do, I've seen them many times in the wild on Safari in Kenya sat on stools in neat lines whilst a Masai warrior cracks a whip in their faces wink

I would seriously doubt any wild animal, particularly a lion, would willingly be made to sit, beg, jump through hoops without being forced to. Usually through inflicting fear or pain on them. It has been shown that this is how they are trained.

Deep rooted psychological trauma???????

Interesting how the other one legs it across the ring to join in with the attack, yet the others just sit where they are looking bored.

Lions belong on the grassy plains of Africa, not being made to do stupid tricks in a circus.

Lion attacks man in bid to be pride leader, not that big a shocker really. Happens in the wild all the time, only differnce is the pack leader in the wild, A, shaggs all the wimin of the pride, and B has big feck off claws and teeth to defend himself with.

There's one at the back that calmly stays seated on it's stool throughout the bedlam. I'll bet he's the trouble maker.....[whispers]I heard Mr Pinko was going to cut our meat rations back, go get him boys[whispers]

This clip starts a bit earlier and shows the 'trainer' hit the Lion that started the attack twice in the face.
Can't say I really blame the Lion.

+1

That's more disturbing than the attack itself!

FIW it's about 1:05 into the clip.

The lion seemed to be backing away when he hit it. Good for the lion, and good for its mate for jumping in to assist with the mauling.

Me neither. Treat dangerous animal as plaything to entertain the gawping masses, one day get mauled.

What did we learn?

He's a dumb fk. Right at the beginning of the youtube video posted above he is limping around, he had already been attacked by then (see the note that appears on screen a couple of secs in). He should have hot-footed it out of there, not keep jabbing the lion in the face when it was backing off, considering it had just tasted his blood.

As per some of the comments - the lions let him off lightly. If they wanted, they'd have had him.
