This has made the news - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-11475361

But I'm confused - why was there a lake of sludge at all and just there and right next to a river?

I don't think it is right next to a river, that large body of water nearest the camera is another 'settling pond' type thing.

Presumably this factory carried on producing whatever it does, and the unfortunate byproduct was stored somewhere while those responsible hoped the problem it was causing would just go away. I suppose, in a sense, that's what it's done.

Perhaps now they will repair the broken bank and carry on.

"The sludge - a mixture of water and mining waste containing heavy metals"

Is it really that toxic?

"The sludge is a strong alkali, meaning it will cause burns when it comes into contact with the skin, and can damage lungs and the digestive system if it is ingested. This may cause death."

&

"Four people are known to have died, and 120 were injured. Six more are missing."

Ah. I must admit the article I read had no information in regards to the effects of the toxic sludge, so the above paragraph made it sound fairly tame.

Apparently people were wading up to their necks to save stuff from houses relatives etc etc. They have quite bad burns over everywhere that got 'wet'
