Does 'on benefits' include those on Tax Credits? Quite a big difference if so.

Iirc govt has spent a lot on supporting ex mining communities for years, which might explain it.

IDS reckons 25% of those on Incap Ben will be assessed fit for work under new rules. So 75% won't, preumably.

Not surprised to see Rhyl West on the list. When the recession hit in the 80's many of the smaller hotels were turned into bedsits. Plenty of doleites decided it would be better to be on the dole by the seaside rather than in a large city.

Benefit blackspots in the recession could be due to a big local employer going under and taking out a swathe of suppliers and services that relied on the wages from the employees. So a big company goes takes out the small local suppliers, takes out the pub, etc.

Similar issues in lots of run-down seaside towns - Morecambe, for example.

Same on the Kent & Sussex coast. Combined with traditional seaside holiday industry collapse as we all went to Spain, B&B owners were glad of whatever trade they cold get.

And if you're looking for a job, living on the coast is hardly central.

Interesting to note that according to the Suns little map, Rhyl west is 2nd and 19th and Birkenhead 9th and 15th confused

An easy win for Labour, would have been to help Cammel Laird . . . . . . . they didnt and its now very much a shadow of its former self frown

That fisrt pic of Rochdale looks pretty nice! Tidy, well parked cars, all the spaces filled, no chavs on the streets. Better than some areas in Cheltenham!
