Responding to the news of higher growth in the UK economy

Alan Johnson, the shadow chancellor, claimed that the figures showed that the momentum “remains from Labour’s support for the economy”.

He added: “The risk going forward is that the Government has a plan to cut one million jobs, but no plan to support the private sector in replacing them.”

Dear god, I assume Alan Johnson is reasonably intelligent, doesn't he understand that confidence is growing BECAUSE the deficit is finally being dealt with and that some sensible policies are being pursued. We need to re balance the economy, move people from the non productive to productive roles.

An apology, and admission of guilt, and acceptence that they made a mess, this is beyond the Labour party.

Is he wrong? I don't really know.

How much of the deficit has actually been dealt with yet? How long would it take for any of these cuts made so far help the economy to grow?

is it really about realising the figures, or just inspiring confidence which leads to growth?

That's your first mistake right there. He used to be a postman and joined two pop bands don't you know.

Wiki said:
He passed the 11 plus exam and attended Sloane Grammar School in Chelsea, now part of Pimlico Academy, and left school at the age of 15.[3] He then stacked shelves at Tesco before becoming a postman at 18.[2] He was interested in music and joined two pop music bands.[3] Johnson joined the Union of Communication Workers, becoming a branch official. He joined the Labour Party in 1971, although he considered himself a Marxist ideologically aligned with the Communist Party of Great Britain.[4] A full-time union official from 1987, he became General Secretary of the newly formed Communication Workers Union in 1993 following a series of union mergers.

Indeed. Many people would be surprised about how much the extreme left have infected British and American politics. The extreme left have always been hovering around within Labour, even there under Bliar, hiding just beneath his shiny cheesy veneer (clearly fooling many), but bubbling more to the surface under the less shiny Broon.

If the economy was getting worse, he would blame the Coalition.
If the economy was getting better, he would have the previous government take credit.

It's a no win for the government, bascially, Heads Labour wins, Tails Coalition lose.

But as a political strategy surely a clean break from the past in the early stages of opposition is a desireable thing.

Also in answer to the questions above, yes it's too early to tell, but to take credit for this growth is crazy and deluded.

Businesses are re investing because of expectations that the UK business environment is significantly better than under Labour.

This is the same bloke who, when it was announced that he was to be the Shadow Chancellor, expressed his surprise, and stated that he'd beter go and buy an economics primer, virtually admitting he knew nothing about his field of supposed expertise.

God help us....rolleyes

It's not a complete disaster though. he's only the Shadow Chancellor, and, as such, isn't in a position to take decisions that will fk things up. Unlike his Labour predecessors in the role in government. He'll spout a load of crap, the traditional Labour voters and the people with vested interests in the Labour Party will lap it up (and probably half of the Liberal Democrats): voters of the other persuasion will continue to think that the guy is a lightweight. In short, Politics as normal.

They are all "nobody career politicians". The only way you get to be a politician is to start young and do all the st lacky jobs as researchers and such. Then after years of toil and bullst you might be in a position to be an election candidate in some god awful constituency. Pretty much like any other "career".

There is another way of course and that's to be filthy rich.
