At about 06.50am this morning I heard a hollow sort of bang which I knew wasn't normal ,it appears to be a gas explosion in Salford.I live about 6miles away so it must be serious.

Its nowhere near what most people would think of Salford. Its on the outskirts of Irlam, just south of the M62 between Manchester and Warrington. The silly news people are confusing the City of Salford (ie the wider metropolitan borough), with the settlement of Salford.

That area isn't bad - not somewhere I'd choose to live, but that's mostly because of the proximity of the motorway.

Yes Irlam, surprised its in the borough of Salford as it's almost as close to Warrington, still a good 5miles away so it was a pretty big bang to be heard from my home.Very close to chemical plant at Carrington which was my first thought as the bang was identical to the Manchester IRA bomb.

I wonder if I heard this too. I live in Lymm which is about 5 miles from Irlam and heard a sound like a distant dropped skip at about this time.

I am amazed that Irlam is in the borough of Salford too - I would have guessed it is in Trafford. I agree this isn't a bad area.

I guess they'll be fetching the units worktops back from Eccles, Altrincham and other surrounding areas today.
