How many young people are leaving the UK
Discussion
I have two daughters who are working and one son at Leeds Uni.
One of my daughters ( 24) has left the UK to work in Dubai , the other one is job hunting abroad. My son is in his second year studying physics and is looking to the US, Germany or Holland to do a masters and also wants to work abroad rather than the UK.
Their reasoning is very consistent. They don't believe the UK is a rational place to live any more and have no intention of paying off a debt burden they did not create and will cripple their chances of achieving a good standard of living.
I have no idea if they are unusual, but if the majority of people their age are thinking the same way how long will it be before we hear complaints about a new 'brain drain' effecting the UK's performance?

I can see their reasoning. Where is actually better, though? I thought this was a global recession.

Working abroad is easierr than it ever has been - however, when it is time to settle, there may be a return.
The ability to escape your student debts by working overseas is a bit worrying.
I think they mean the national debt. The ability to escape your student debts by working overseas is a bit worrying.
I am a few years older in my early thirties but having seen how much better the living standards in Australia are I was very keen to move out there. Unfortunately I have not been able to find a way in at the moment. But I agree with the sentiments of your children, the UK has got itself in a mess and I don't really see it getting much better.

I think he means the UK structural debt. If so, I've got some bad news about the US and €uroland....
And in other news, there are other places in the world other than the increasingly irrelvant US of Arse and the Belgian state of pratistan....

I live in belgium, 25 and I have settled here. Although with our current benefits/health care system, we can't support it much longer. We're already paying the pensions of our parents and our grandparents, rather than our own, and an enormous national debt.
If I was braver and could let go better, I'd have moved from here 5 years ago.

What will you have there that you don't have here? (apart from sun)A fighting chance of getting on the property ladder.
Roads which are not nearly as badly congested as ours.
Friendly people.
Better looking women.
Better beaches.
Better food.
And as mentioned the weather!

What will you have there that you don't have here? (apart from sun)Too many people want to emigrate to a country they either have never even visited (how many people here want to live in Oz and yet have never even been?) or have spent a holiday there and though 'I like this'. Don't we all!
The other grass/greener etc.

I'm 27 and have been working in London for the last 4 years, since graduating. In the last three months i've seen the following amongst my close friends;
2 move to Cayman (one working in business services / finance and one in marketing)
2 move to Dubai (teacher and lawyer)
2 move to Sydney (Digital marketing and construction)
1 move to Hong Kong (finance)
2 looking to move to Canada (IT & Publishing)
All have pretty much been lifestyle moves (i.e. better quality of life), with all feeling that the UK doesn't have that much to offer right now, so why not try somewhere else. They all found jobs pretty quickly once they started properly looking (i'm talking within 6-8 weeks generally) and are all being better paid in real terms than they were doing similar roles here.
The only thing stopping me joining them at the moment is that i'm trying to build up a business here, but it's all up for review. Especially on a wet, grey, cold Monday morning!
