A stupid article, certainly the headlines.
Racists & BNP etc. will just hang on to the "white" bit of the headline.
A fair number of immigrants will be white as well but not "britons", i.e. poles, other europeans, north americans, aussies and so on.
By all means, immigration needs to be discussed and managed as appropriate for the need of the country. Why is colour of any relevance at all?

My understanding was that the US was NOT a welfare state - so why the high level of immigration?FWIW people will always try to move to get a better quality of life.

Skin colour shouldn't be an issue but I would like to live in a country where I didn't have to be concerned about offending the religious beliefs of people I have just met. Or where I didn't have to constantly explain why no 'ethnic' people use our services (the answer is always because 2 out of every 1000 people in town are non white british).
I think that generally most human beings are decent, most people couldn't give 2 hoots about the skin colour of their neighbour, the biggest differences are cultural ones which drive wedges between people and lead to the creation of a fragmented society that looks on the face of it to be segregated by race. This in turn allows the bad people from all sides to stir up hatred, jealousy and tensions, sieve out these negative elements and make everyone equal and living by the same set of societal norms and you would be onto a winner. Getting people to understand each others cultures by integrating them more fully would have a similar but less dramatic effect.
But while racist rags like the Mail are respected by the populus there is no chance of a decent society and little chance of the government closing the gates to incomers.

Of course the US is not a welfare state It's right next door to Mexico & offers great weather, a lot of land and a great life.

I'll be very very surprised if white Brits arent a minority by 2020.
On the other hand, perceptions are different to the reality. Last time i was in central London i was aghast at how white it was - hardly a non white face to be seen. Yet in most small provincial towns id say near 50% of faces are non white. Its the opposite of what id expect.
