A suspected bomb has been found in a suitcase that was about to be loaded on a plane bound for Germany from an airport in Namibia.

The device, which reportedly included a detonator and timer but no explosives, was found.

To see if it would get through security?

Maybe the explosives were meant to be added by someone jsut before it gets on the plane

Either the terrorists are fking stupid, and attempting to fly bombs from large airports (why not fly them from regional airports, the type that Ryanair use), or its time to make everyone nervous again.

Honestly, why on earth would you attempt to bring down an aircraft, when there's busy trains running all across Europe? You could drive a truck through a bridge wall to land on the tracks just seconds before an express train hit it. That'd kill hundreds.

There's something not quite right about this. If I can think of easy ways to kill lots of people, why can't the "terrrizzzsts"?

Yup, quite common apparently for test runs and walk throughs (so I read), but good point - maybe someone was due to put the explosive part on at some other time, hadn't thought of that.

Namibia? They should have sent it from Gatwick. The security is a joke there.

If I were to push my brain into conspirathink mode, I might consider the growing backlash against the TSA's invasive security theatre. The TSA are US only of course, but they couldn't have anything bad happen on or near their soil - they just need more reasons why they should continue with their ridiculousness wink

I've thought this before, why are they soo obsessed with blowing planes out the sky when theres only a couple of hundred people on them? Surely it'd be a lot easier and as devastating to target public places? I'm surprised there haven't been more attacks various undergrounds and such like.

Airport security is a joke. I flew to and from Romania the other week from Luton with a 12" pair of scissors in my briefcase. I only discovered them upon my return when they fell out. This incident doesn't surprise me in the slightest.

I think the fear of crashing in a plane or falling off a building is something we all deep down fear from very early in life. Explains why the jets crashing into the twin towers frightened all of us to our core.
A plane crash makes bigger headlines that a train crash. I'm thinking a bomb on a plane is more scary to us than on a train. Terrorists want the biggest headlines possible.

Did it though? Frighten us to the core I mean. Yes it was sad and shocking but I honestly don't know of anyone who is frightened or has changed part of their lifestyle because of 9/11, london tube bombings, Bali bombs etc.

If you meant on a government level then fair enough but I don't think its had a great effect on individuals.

Reports now say it was a dummy used by the authorities to test out security.
