Madness - however...

When my folks split up, my mother got a huge cash payoff, most of my Dad's considerable pension (40 years with M&S finished at a very senior level) and a huge monthly payment that was conditional that it was to look after her when she wasn't working or while she remained single.

She made a point of not working and while she's been with a rather successful lawyer for the last 15 years, she still asked my father last year if she could keep the payments coming if she married the guy. Dad rightly told her to do one, so she won't marry.

Mum's fella is a lovely guy and is really pissed off with her. Dad is a cool guy but has resigned himself to have been taken to the cleaners (a lesson he hasn't learnt apparently) and while I love my Mum to bits, she's been a bh about this.

Problem is, the courts seem to like taking the piss as well.

A huge increase in maintenance and a trust fund suggested to be set up was already done. She wanted to spend how she liked.

He offered to put in a trust fund for their daughter, she wanted it for herself.

She still will get the £2k maintenance payments.

I don't know the people involved.
They have nothing to do with me.

Why should I get annoyed over a matter which doesn't affect me in any way whatsoever?

Because we need something to be annoyed with.

Plus I hate stuff like this because it inspires other stbags to do the same thing.

You can't, Eric, because it doesn't reinforce your prejudices. I'm in the same boat.

Pity it doesn't impact on your (seemingly, lack of a) sense of justice.

If matters which don't affect you directly, don't affect you, why do you both beconme vexatious in other threads over other matters? Or, heaven forbid, are you both posturing? Surely not smile

I didn't know any Jews in Nazi Germany either... /Godwin's Law.

It upsets me because some part of me would like (hopes) to win the lottery and it annoys me that I could find myself in the same position. Plus that fact that what I perceive to be an injustice has occured at all.

There are issues with the way the CSA (or whatever they cuirrently call themselves these days) operate the calculation of their maintenance amounts.

In pre CSA days, maintenance was awarded for once and for all in a one off court decision. If the economic condition of the payer of the maintenance improved, his "old" family obtained no benefit from this improvement. Whatever about paying to ex-wives, the change in approach was aimed at ensuring that CURRENT children from ALL relationships did not lose out purely because the maintenance provider was no longer directly involved in the original relationship.

This change in philosophy, whilst beneficial in theory, has created problems as it does create a sense of uncertainty in the case of the maintenance provider because the amounts being paid under the original maintenace arrangements are liable to change over time.

However, why shouldn't this individual's original family not obtain some benefit from his good fortune?

His daughter should indeed benefit (and no doubt would anyway without a court case), why should his ex wife (of ten years ago)?.
