At last! someone with a bit of nous makes the decision to ban seductive fag packets. Making them more elusive will really put the kids off buying 10 Woodbines won't it.

Andrew Landsleys actually my MP, he's as much use as an ashtray on a motorbike

i... i just didnt realise that it was the bright colours

of course the reds and burgundy's

its not the nicotine by god - its the colourful packets!!!

its the whole thing of hiding them in the shops - whats the point!?

no one starts smoking on the basis of an impulse buy.

Studies have shown that the smoking ban in public places has had the most effect on smoking - making them harder to obtain will just make them more attractive IMHO.

Studies have also shown the numbers of people smoking is now rising after falling during the period after the ban.

Could the rise be something to do with rising unemployment, increased stress over money/job matters?

Genius. biggrin

Maybe if they used images of middle aged men having sex with other middle aged men, then kids wouldn't go near them. Putting the "fag" into fags, so to speak.

Or just have big text "I BUM GOATS" might put off 15 year olds from taking it up.

I'm going to write to the BMA with my suggestions.

Lots of young women smoking outside a bar what better excuse to join them would a young guy need then being a smoker himself as I am sure more women smoke then men.

I wonder how many kids took up fags after they went on sale in a black packet with a skull and crossbones on and DEATH printed in large letters across the front, or with images of knackered lungs

Plain white packages, so even less able to work out from the packaging if they are knock offs made in china or dodgy imports, genius idea.

I didn't want knackered lungs so i switched to a brand that cause low birth weight instead. It's good they all have different warnings.

More than likely, yes.

Would a brown packet stop someone from smoking? I doubt it very much.

I see a market for cigarette box sized brand name stickers, or even designer cigarette cases opening up.

If people are that fussed about what the box looks like, surely they'll just buy a decent box to keep their fags in.

Had a quick search and couldn't find much, but did find these:

Don't think that's true is it?

Maybe a blip up after the ban for various socio-economic reasons but the trend is still an overall decline...

My GP never fking stops banging on to me about it.

I wish they'd use the real side effects of smoking not the calculated medical facts.

Things like making you look like your mum/dad by drying out your skin, making a man impotent and limiting the size of an erection, making you smell like a tramp, very bad breath, making your teeth look dirty, yellow finger, the strange puckerd top lip women who smoke get which looks like their grandmas lip and the seriously ugly rasping cough they seem to get that's oh so attractive on a date smile

All these social problems would have a much greater effect on youngsters than saying you might die early, you might get cancer . . . they are all mights which may or may not happen but the social effects will all happen at least to some degree.

Spot on there, plus in most places it means i can actually talk to a girl rather than shouting in her ear struggling to be heard, or not hearing what she's said and just nodding anyway hehe

Back on topic though, i'd be interested to hear if the images or slogans on cigarette packs actually stopped or contributed to someone stopping smoking.
Didn't really affect me, anyone else?

I gave up just over a year ago, but not because of the packaging changes. Just because it was costing a packet and slowly killing me. I never thought I'd give up, because I really enjoyed it and wasn't too bothered about the cost or health implications.

A mate at work told me and another mate that he was on Champix and it was working quite well and could be worth a try. me and my mate tried and it worked perfectly. I'd tried to give up before, but generally was a grumpy git and a bd to those around me when I was quitting. With the Champix tablets though, I wasn't too bad.

Everyone says "You'll feel so much better", "Your taste will imrpove" etc. It hasn't really to be honest. I put on half a stone in 3 months!! laugh

But, as for the whole packaging thing and the smoking outside, well the packaging is bks, no-one starts smoking because the packet looks good. Smoking outside? They should have let landlords decide, it destroyed my brothers pub trade and many others from what I've seen.

Overall, I just want the government to leave us the fk alone to make our own mistakes. Bring back common sense and taking responsability for yourself instead of the government trying to take responsibility for us. (But that's a whole different debate!!)
