NOPD officers are reputed to be some of the most corrupt cops in the the US. New Orleans was the most dangerous city in North America before Katrina. It all goes together unfortunately.
t situation in New Orleans after Katrina hit.Don't let the Katrina thing excuse New Orleans in the slightest though. New Orleans has long since had problems long before that hurricane appeared in the Gulf. Like the Levee Board building a new casino and ordering a new Lear Jet instead of paying for maintenance of the levees or something daft like that.
It was probably the only city in the world where community after a disaster fell upon it was the last thing anyone thought about - looting, murders, theft etc.. total lawlessness following the hurricane.
Bali, Tsunami, Haiti, Middle east earthquakes, china floods and ALL - never had the issues that N.O had.
Let them suffer in their own make up..
Harsh - I know but fair..???

One of the more shocking things that came out afterwards were the stories of mass gang rape taking place in the toilets/back areas of the superdome.
The interview with the British family where the dad was told under no circumstances should his wife and 15yr old daughter go to the bathroom alone as they would BOTH be raped was scary to hear.

My brother in law was talking to some ex Louisiana Troopers (he's ex Alabama Trooper) and those guys actually did a shake down of the Superdome for weapons during the aftermath.
Apparently they grabbed a janitor and his canvas bag trolley thing, and then went to every bed in the Superdome and asked for all weapons to be handed in. Total on the spot amnesty. They wanted knives and guns (both legal and illegal). Anyone who didn't hand over their guns were escorted to the exit.
By the time they finished the trolley was stacked full of guns, and no one could quite believe it. They did some tests on them afterwards and 90% were illegal firearms.
The people owning these guns were probably the ones who expected the 2 FEMA drivers to unload each of their 50 foot containers of emergency gear (beds and food). The FEMA drivers refused and got the hell out of New Orleans before they lost two very expensive rigs. Left their trailers, which were eventually eaten by the waters. So all those pictures of the suffering in the Superdome - it was outside in 2 containers that no one could be bothered to unload.

Speaking of that; is it about time for an overpriced drink in the bar at the LaPavillion?
