The Mirror said:
A lollipop lady says she resigned from her job after council jobsworths reprimanded her for not holding her stick properly.
Judy Gaisford, 61, was threatened with disciplinary measures because she would not turn the 6ft tall pole upside down when not using it.
Mrs Gaisford claims she was accused of breaching health and safety rules by Worcestershire county council and threatened with disciplinary action. She said: “Where is the common sense? I resigned because I disagreed with the council policy. Surely swinging a pole around when children are nearby is more of a health and safety issue.”
Mrs Gaisford had been lollypop lady at Hindlip Church of England First School, near Droitwich, Worcs, for two years but quit in October. She was employed after a child was killed by a vehicle outside the 94-pupil school in 2005 and has not yet been replaced.
One parent, who did not want to be named, stormed: “The health and safety brigade have gone bonkers.”
A council spokesman said: “When guidelines are not followed, this leads to confusion. Regrettably, after a number of reminders as to how to carry out procedures, this lollipop lady took the decision to resign.”

have they done a risk assesment of 61 year old wrists and the weight of a lolly pop?

Have they considered a fiberglass/ composite lolly pop.

have they considered reading a lolloy pop upside down may distract drivers.

have they considered a upside down lolly pop is not in the fking highway code!

The lollypop is held head down when not in use to notify drivers that it is safe to continue.

Thats how it works, but I see them all the time not bothering, the reason they dont bother is because they like to lean on it when not stopping traffic...

This isnt health and safety gone mad, its the council reprimanding her for not following the rules, her actions could cause an accident.

Sorry, who hasn't been replaced - the child or the lollypop lady?

- and yes they have gone bonkers. Surely a lollypop lady or gent holding a lollypop in any manner, at a crossing, is better than no attendant there at all.

Worker disagrees with management about how job should be done and insists on doing it her way. Worker is shown the door. How is that controversial? If someone isn't doing their job properly in the eyes of management, what do they expect to happen?

this is the way it has worked for years, i don't need to have a upturned lolly pop to know it is safe to pass.

the lolly pop heading into or in the road is a big enough clue for me personly.

these are little old ladies that get paid peanuts to keep kids safe. they know what they are doing.

there are going to be more accidents due to kids getting clocked by a rotating lolly pop.

this is just a cravy idea adopted from america without thinking through the consequences. there lollypop is 1 foot not 5 foot!

Unless you're some kind of pervert, who would know this?

I thought the clue when to stop was lady/man/pedo was stood in the middle of the road with a bright yellow jacket and 5 foot sign on a stick stating stop.

Easy to miss tho!

I think you have the same misunderstanding as the worker in question - doesn't matter whether management are right or not, if you can't persuade them to see it your way, you do as you are told. You want to call the shots, go work for yourself.

How about if they decided they didn't like the hi-vis uniform and would dress in black instead? Or that they would like to make their own lollipop? Or that it would be better to shove the kids out into the road first before stepping out themselves? Or that it would be fun to make inappropriate comments to schoolgirls?

Sorry, they have a way that they are expected to work. They comply with that or they don't do it.

Heck, let's go the whole hog, what if they had a history of raping young girls? Oh hang on, they don't have a history of that in the same way they did none of the things you said.

FTR I've never seen a lollypop lady holding a sign upside down so it's not that widespread. Still, now they've followed the rules to the letter they don't have a lollypop lady so that's better? M'kay...

you forgot to say what if they abused the kids!

we are talking about little old ladies leaning on a lolly pop and claiming this is the equivelent of crazey little old ladies throwing kids under vehicles!

the world is not black and white, and these kids don't need a crazy stupid idea of an inverted lollypop!

next you will say you have never broken the speed limit.

No, I am saying that if you have an employee who straight out refuses to follow procedure, they have to go. What workplace do you know where you can tell your boss you aren't doing as you are told and expect to keep your job?

Depends doesnt it? If your boss told you to do something that endangered your or other live(s), or if you were told to break the law then yes. In this case the little old lady protested that she was being told to do something stupid, that may have endangered children, and quit. As I said, brilliant result that.
