Facebook status suicide note!
Discussion
Firstly I am not starting this thread to poke fun at those who commit suicide, secondly apologies for the wail link.

Now I can decide if her facebook 'friends' are a bunch of twunts, if the ones who were real friends were busy not being on the internet, or if it proves that facebook friends do not under any circumstances = actual real life friends.

I read the article this morning, 1000+ facebook friends i bet less than half that really knew her most people on facebook seem to just have random people as friends.
Apparently there may have been a case of "crying wolf" involved as she had made threats to do it before, unfortunately this time she followed through with them.

There was an article on the whole 'online firends v actual friends' numbers I read somewhere.
Article went on to say that the 'average' FB use has around 120 'friends'. But in real life, only about 6 of those were people they 'actually' considered friends, and had regular dealings with.

Well, nobody has 1082 "real" friends.
Also, I doubt that many people were on Facebook at 10:53pm on Christmas Day. So, it is entirely possible that few, if any, of her real friends saw the message until the next day.
The article also suggests that she had made similiar posts in the past, therefore her post seems to have been treated as attention seeking.
All in all, I don't think that there is a story here, apart from the tragedy of her death.

There once was a shepherd boy who was bored as he sat on the hillside watching the village sheep. To amuse himself he took a great breath and sang out, "Wolf! Wolf! The Wolf is chasing the sheep!"
The villagers came running up the hill to help the boy drive the wolf away. But when they arrived at the top of the hill, they found no wolf. The boy laughed at the sight of their angry faces.
"Don't cry 'wolf', shepherd boy," said the villagers, "when there's no wolf!" They went grumbling back down the hill.
Later, the boy sang out again, "Wolf! Wolf! The wolf is chasing the sheep!" To his naughty delight, he watched the villagers run up the hill to help him drive the wolf away.
When the villagers saw no wolf they sternly said, "Save your frightened song for when there is really something wrong! Don't cry 'wolf' when there is NO wolf!"
But the boy just grinned and watched them go grumbling down the hill once more.
Later, he saw a REAL wolf prowling about his flock. Alarmed, he leaped to his feet and sang out as loudly as he could, "Wolf! Wolf!"
But the villagers thought he was trying to fool them again, and so they didn't come.
At sunset, everyone wondered why the shepherd boy hadn't returned to the village with their sheep. They went up the hill to find the boy. They found him weeping.
"There really was a wolf here! The flock has scattered! I cried out, "Wolf!" Why didn't you come?"
An old man tried to comfort the boy as they walked back to the village.
"We'll help you look for the lost sheep in the morning," he said, putting his arm around the youth, "Nobody believes a liar...even when he is telling the truth!"

I am a very sociable person and I have no more than 250 friends on my facebook.
I call bulls
t that she had over 1000 actual friends.
Anyway, if she's done it before then I can't really blame them.
Cries for attention can get boring. I block anyone on my news feed that whines too much.
And it was Christmas day.. Were you on facebook on christmas day? I wasn't.

A couple of times I've seen people put up messages on Facebook alluding to suicide. More vague then this but enough to make me feel uncomfortable. In both cases it was people who added me after meeting me once or twice (I'd say this accounts easily for half my friends on there). Usually it's followed by "hey honi u ok call me" and I presume everything is fine once they've had a cry.
Attention seeking or more charitably, a cry for help. Rarely is it any more and I doubt I'd reply unless it was someone I actually knew and could give a call (actually I did that once too and had just misunderstood the status

Thats not how a lot of people use facebook though....I have been out in a pub and the next day get friend requests from people who were with people i may have spoken to for 5 minutes....and if i accept them I then get their mates add me because I know their mate!I call bulls
t that she had over 1000 actual friends. If you accepted all the people you wanted (or added all the people you wanted) you could easily to get 1k in weeks ..... you wouldnt even need to leave the house.
The story is, as such, nonsense and is only in the paper because of the tenious link between FC "friends" and real "friends".
I have 47 friends on my facebook profile. A few of them are family.
I have a rule that if I don't speak or communicate with them in over 3 months, or I would not feel comfortable going down the pub with them for a random chat, they are not really my "friend" so they don't really need to be on there.
When I did have a lot of people on there (I went through the phase of accepting people from school that I didn't really know), there were a lot of attention seekers and I had to block loads of people. Especially those who put their childs picture as their profile picture and harp on about what tarquin has done all day...
With that in mind, I can see why people ignored her, and of course how can someone truely have over 1k friends?! She is probably a serial attention seeker who cried wolf too many times.

I heard about this story last night and am torn. I've been a long term manic depressive for longer than not. I understand the bleakness of existence.
What happened (I think) is this...
She posts up status after doing nothing looking for support. None comes. She ODs.
Sad, but facebook, among relative strangers is not the place to look for help in this scenario. I saw her mother condemning the actions of the "friends" but where was she? Why hadn't she called her daughter or spent xmas day with her?
There are a lot of questions in this case and sadly not a lot of answers. It's hard to get help for mental health in this country, even with over ten years of depression and a hospital visit for an OD you'll still struggle with your GP for any meaningful help other than a prescription.

Very sad story this. Also a related article in the Sun of today. Essentially, I was getting up a head of steam about spam on my Facebook page. I have subsequently let my account go into abeyance.
Also it`s about nutjobs giving you a hard time, as has happened to this poor woman. Instead, I have built up cyber friendships by using Second Life. By using an avatar of the opposite sex, I`m having a good time.
No substitute for real life friends though
