The owners of a hotel who refused to allow a gay couple a double room acted unlawfully, a judge has ruled.

Peter and Hazelmary Bull, of the Chymorvah Hotel, near Penzance, said as Christians they did not believe unmarried couples should share a room.

Martyn Hall and his civil partner Steven Preddy, from Bristol, said the incident in September 2008 was "direct discrimination" against them.

They were awarded £1,800 each in damages at Bristol County Court.

"When we booked to stay at the Chymorvah Hotel this was not, as some have suggested, a set up sponsored by a pressure group, we just wanted a relaxing weekend away - something thousands of other couples in Britain do every weekend," Mr Preddy said.

Funny thing is most couples would have just taken it on as the policy of the b&b and got on with their lives not take it to court and make it a media circus! It's their house it wasn't against gay people just unmarried people....if that's what they want at their house then fair play....now they have both been charged £1800?! Whats to stop me from trying to book with my GF and then get them done again when they say no?!

They explicitly only accepted married heterosexual couples and therefore excluded any homosexual couples in a civil partnership. As civil partnerships have the same legal status as married couples it was discrimination on the grounds of sexuality.

There is nothing wrong with them refusing to give you a double room if you are not married providing they would equally refuse to give one to an unmarried same-sex couple.

They just happened to be political ativists backed by the Equality and Human
Rights Commission. Of course it was a show trial. Normal people would of gone somewhere else, where they don't mind the laundry bills

"Gay equality charity Stonewall said it was delighted at the outcome."

Equality? I thought their aims were rather higher than that, seemed to have achieved them in some areas too.

If you're running a hotel the clue is in the title. Providing the guests can pay up you have no business imposing your morals on them.

remins me of the line out of Fawlty Towers when the young unmarrieds try to book a room.

"We'll have a double if that's all right with the Police..."

Simple discrimination.I've no time for narrow-minded berks like these.

Bit of a bummer for the owners but this might just ring in the necessary changes to stop bigots continuing to be all anal about the issue.

So now we have the Christians saying they are being discriminated against for their beliefs.

Like paedophiles are discriminated against for their's.

Paedophilia isn't a belief.

Don't you believe it - there's plenty of paedo literature that would say that it's normal in many cultures, good to educate children in sexuality etc.

I don't agree with the decision. People should be allowed to display their bigotry if they so wish. I would rather be made aware that I'm not welcome in an establishment before I've booked it, or spent any money there.

Here's a tip, use the quote feature, that's what it's there for.

And BTW, paedophilia isn't a belief, whatever you may have read to the contrary
