Just wondering why butter seems to have gone up from about £1 a lump to nearer £1.50 in the last few weeks? If it's down to increased transport costs through higher fuel prices, why haven't other 'daily' foods gone up by 50%?

Is selective profiteering going on under the smokescreen of inflation?

If everyone's buying butter and the price has gone up, will the supermarkets be discounting guns?

I just looked on mysupermarket for this.

The prices haven't changed for several months.

I watched that film when I was younger and generally believed (for way too long) that those were real commodities.
I was not a smart child.

A reference to a Herman Goering quote?

Interesting that someone else has noticed this. Its the one commodity (apart from fuel) that I have noticed rocketing in price as well.

I heard on the radio on Saturday that it takes 20 pints of milk to make a lb of butter.

Have wholesale milk prices changed ? So that the farmer actually gets some money..........

There was a lot of noise I recall from the farmers that the big supermarket chains were making more profit per pint than they were being paid to produce the stuff - but it was a while ago.

AFAIK it predates Goering and, in economic terms at least, was used to illistrate the concept of Marginal Utility; something along the lines of, if you have to fight for your life, you will value guns more highly than butter - you get the idea.

I think the full quote went something like;

"What shal we buy, guns or butter?

perparedness makes us powerful, butter merely makes us fat."

I believe average milk price has risen recently, however at somewhere around the £0.26/litre mark I don't think it can be blamed on the increase in butter price tongue out

As for supermarket profit compared with wholesale price I reckon it would be very close with the cost per litre at the supermarket around £0.70/litre currently.

As to whether a price of £0.70 a litre is really a sustainable price for milk when compared to a figure nearly 5 times higher for bottled water; I have a feeling the answer may be no.
