Row Over Crematorium Heating For Swimmers Enlarge photo

Conservative-run Redditch Borough Council believes it would be an environmentally good use of energy and could save £14,000 a year at the Abbey Stadium pool.

The local authority maintains it would help reduce carbon emissions from energy which would otherwise be exhausted into the atmosphere.

But officials from the union Unison have called the plans "sick and an insult to local residents".

Roger McKenzie, Unison's West Midlands regional secretary, said: "It goes to show yet again that the Conservatives know the price of everything and the value of nothing.

"Unfortunately, local authorities are increasingly pursuing desperate policies in a reaction to the unprecedented spending cuts imposed from Whitehall."

He wants the council to apologise to people in the area for the "insulting and insensitive" proposals.

But the local authority wants to press ahead with consultations over the plan.

A series of briefings will be held later this week, with religious groups, funeral directors and members of the public.

Does this go in Sports, or politics? Maybe Finance? Or Health?

Seems like a bloody good idea.

Why waste all that energy because some people think it's in poor taste.

OK to drive around the country using the liquified (and highly refined) remains off long dead animals to power you though!

Absolutely. The mistake Redditch council have made is trying to boast about it. If they'd just implemented it without trying to say "Look how green we are" then it would have been fine. Now they've got the curtain-twitchers riled by it.

As an idea it's dead in the water.

I live in Redditch.

My wife was cremated last March in Redditch.

I have no objections to the Council's plans.

I am sure my wife wouldn't have minded either.

A good idea to use energy that would otherwise be wasted.

However, what does annoy the F**K out of me is the fact that Redditch Council is quite happy to p*ss vast amounts of of money up the wall on other things, but then pleads poverty over something quite trivial. Guess this is a separate discussion point.

WTF does it have to do with religious groups? Really?
Who else is going to tell the ignorant and ill informed what to think? Apart from the Daily Mail!

They should just do it without telling anybody , that way no-one any the wiser.
I think it's a sensible idea.

Can't see the problem really. It's not like they're killing people deliberately to heat the pool.

Although.....that gives me an idea.

Don't see any problem with it myself.

As for religious groups, they tend to be called upon for those big life events - birth, marriage & death so will naturally deal with many bereaved people and be able to offer valuable feedback on people's perceptions.

... Can't see the problem either. Why not use the heat for something useful rather than have it all waft up the chimney?

So it makes people feel a bit queazy. Well nana would take comfort in the fact her warm gasses were wafting around people a while longer. She did seem to enjoy sharing them...rather a lot as I remember.

Instead of asking "Why not?", have any of you thought to ask "Why?"
You need a swimming pool heating. THere are 12000 different ways to heat it and someone says "I know- lets use burning dead people". What on gods sweet earth is the point of that?
Its one of those fking ridiculous ideas by ridiculous people who pretend they care about the environment and pull each other off over who can come up with the most stupid "green" idea that achieves absolutely nothing other than pissing people off.

Press: "So where did this idea come from?"
Redditch Council: "Umm... Its quite an old idea which has worked very well in the past."
Press: "Was it Belsen?"
Redditch Council: "...[uncomfortable pause] global warming, and... sort of...climate er, stuff is...OH MY GOD LOOK OVER THERE... [runs away]"

If there allowed to do that, Can I burn work shy scrounges to heat my home, I could even use the "meat" to feed the homeless.

I think its a good idea - its just heat exchange at the end of the day.

If the professionally offended want to tag their ideas of "think of the dead people" on to it, that's their problem really.

Oil comes from dead crushed plant and possible ancient animal matter - should we stop using fuel and oil in case we offend a few animal lovers?

That's disingenuous and you know it.

They are lighting bloody great furnaces to burn up dead people and then venting all the heat into the atmosphere. What is the problem with passing it through a heat exchanger first and recovering some of the heat before venting to atmosphere?

Also, dead people don't fuel the furnaces any more than burgers fuel a BBQ.

That's going to be a bit of a wee warmer... especially if people relieve themselves in the pool.

TBH if my corpse was used as food, fuel or a draft excluder, it wouldn't really bother me.
