BBC Article

6.2% rise in London
3.3% fall in the north

Is that 6% rise wholly attributed to rich foreign investors buying up our property?

London house prices are always a bit different. The UK average was a rise of 1.5%.

Prices in my town in Northumberland had got completely out of whack. Three bedroom new builds, on little plots, going for £240k.

It was due a correction I think, relative to London.

London could use a correction too

That's crazy. You can get a top quality place in Centrl London for not much more per square foot.

I'm paying just over £500 a square foot in docklands, and walked away from a nice penthouse at £ 400/sq ft in Limehouse last month.

I recently moved from London to Yorkshire, I'm in a nice village between Leeds and Wakefield that is within 2 miles of the M1 and M62. 4 bedroom end terracehouse with 100 metre garden and driveway (mine, not shared) and garage... all for a shade under £140,000.

There really is a large discrepency here between the North and South as there is as much, if not more to do and see up here as down in London for half the price!

Hi Kieran. We've never met, but I live in a posh suburb of Glasgow. I had a bad dream about posts like yours. They really scare me. Any chance you could delete it ?

Most of the difference is down to wage differences. Most people can't choose to move up North and earn the same wages, in most cases.

living in Lindon, and paying the property prices here is often a bit of a gamble. We give up on some important things like free time, space, and pace of life, in the hope that we'll stop working and buy a big place in the o try earlier than we otherwise could.

Often, of course, city life grows on us, and we stay.

But there is also massive fluctuation within Yorkshire, if a similar house to what you describe was in a North Leeds village, Wetherby, Harrogate or Ilkley etc you wouldn't be pay £140K.

That's because much of South and West Yorkshire is a sthole and people are willing to pay a premium to live in the few places that aren't. It's difficult to find somewhere in either of those counties where a once nice village hasn't been spoiled by a load of council houses or old pit housing and the people that tend to live in them.

I'm still trying to work out where this nice village between Leeds and Wakefield is, the two cities just merge into one giant dump!

Absolutely true, it's relative to the fluctuations I can see in London however still a lovely place to be, nicer than most places I've lived in London (other than my 2yrs in Little Venice!) and a funkload cheaper. The places above are very nice though, I'm a big fan of Ilkely
