Police in Bangladesh have arrested four Islamic clerics after a teenage girl was whipped to death for allegedly having an illicit relationship with a married man.
Police chief AKM Shahidur Rahman said the clerics are accused of ordering 14-year-old Mosammet Hena to receive 100 lashes in a fatwa or religious edict at a village in south-western Shariatpur district, 35 miles from the capital Dhaka.
Fatwas are illegal in Bangladesh, a Muslim-majority nation governed by secular laws.
But Islamic clerics often preside over courts that use Sharia law and issue fatwas to deal with issues like extra-marital relationships. Such incidents usually occur in remote villages where police do not have quick access.
The girl collapsed after she was lashed in public with a bamboo cane about 70 times on Monday, Mr Rahman said. She was taken to a hospital and died hours later.
Mr Rahman said the 40-year-old man with whom the girl was allegedly involved was also sentenced to 100 lashes, but he fled to escape the punishment.
"We are hunting for the man," Mr Rahman said.

Ah but remember guys all religions preach peace and love and forgiveness. They are the bringers of happiness to the world.
Rather than say a social con played on people for thousands of years as a form of control e.g. the use of Christianity to give the Kings of Scandinavia more control over their populations through a single church.

And do you think that these types of events would never happen if religion WASN'T involved?Rather than say a social con played on people for thousands of years as a form of control e.g. the use of Christianity to give the Kings of Scandinavia more control over their populations through a single church.
Terribly sad and barbaric. A bunch of vile old snakes hiding their contempt for the world behind a mask of religion and law. This kind of horror is why we must keep fighting in Afghanistan.
This reminds me. I saw a desperately upsetting film over Christmas called "The Stoning of Soraya M." It was a true story set in Iran in the 1980s about a husband who wants shot of his wife and conspires with the local mullahs to have her tried and executed. It does not end well. Utterly heartbreaking.

they have different views and value human life alot less than the west, It does not suprise me one bit.
Please read the article. This sort of behaviour is illegal in Bangladesh and the people responsible have been arrested. On a pretty regular basis we read horrific stories about babies / small children being tortured / killed by parents / mums "boyfriend" etc.. in the UK. Does that mean all Brits "have different views and value human life a lot less than the rest of the west".
