From BBC NI

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-1236...

"It is understood Mr Ringland had an extensive criminal record.

He was on licence for offences of criminal damage, driving while disqualified, making a threat to kill, burglary, theft and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

The licence was imposed at Belfast Crown Court in March last year when he was also jailed for nine months. He had a total of 17 cases against him in both the Crown and Magistrates Courts dating back at least five years."

The biggest crime will be if the police officer gets into trouble over a techincality. I appreciate the law is the law but scumbags like this don't deserve protection from the laws they so clearly disregard.

The moral of the story - if you want to live a life of crime, come to the mainland.

Brilliant.

Are off duty firearms officers allowed to take their weapons home with them or is this a N.I specific thing?

Yes. It seems to be an N.I. specific thing that police officers are allocated PPW's. I've even seen uniformed WPC's tooled up with Heckler & Koch sub machine guns.

A guy I grew up with moved to Ulster and joined the RUC, (he was a Catholic, so not that common in the 80's).

No-one knew he was a policeman, he lived in a Nationalist area, and all his uniform stuff was dried indoors and he left and arrived home in civvies.

The sidearm was a necessary defence, I am glad in this case it has protected many people from harm, both at the petrol station and any future incidents the deceased was likely to have caused.

Good work. If only this could become common place on the mainland perhaps scums like him would think twice.

Fom the BBC web site
"East Belfast MLA Dawn Purvis has demanded an investigation"
why?
The best thing is to find out why we can't have more of this kind of thing...

The investigation should be as to why this POS wasn't sent to meet his maker earlier, before he caused even more misery.

Strange isn't it, if he'd gotten away with it I don't think we'd be hearing much about the poor bd whose throat he (allegedly) held the knife to.

I'm not suggesting someone deserves to die for robbing a petrol station, but I do suggest it's difficult to muster any sympathy for them when it does happen.

To my mind, the question is not whether such a person deserves to die but whether they deserve to live. What is the purpose of them?

For some reason I imagined the scene from Indiana Jones where the big Arab guy is swinging the scimitar about menacingly and Indy pulls out the gun and shoots him!

Good news for sanity but I bet the poor bugger had a few sleepless nights in the run up to this decision
