Apparently appeared in the Times
Can this be true? hard to believe, but in this country nothing would surprise me!

A Well-Planned Retirement
A perfect example of government mismanagement.

Outside Bristol Zoo there is a parking lot for 150 cars and 8 buses.
For 25 years, it's parking fees had been managed by the same very pleasant
attendant. The fees were for cars £1.40, for buses £7.00.

Then one day after 25 solid years of never missing a day of work, he
just didn't show up, so the Zoo Management called the City Council and
asked it to send them another parking agent.

The Council did some research and replied that the parking lot was the
Zoo's own responsibility.
The Zoo then advised the Council that the attendant was a City employee.

The City Council responded that the lot attendant had never been on the
City payroll.

Meanwhile, sitting in his villa somewhere on the coast of Spain or France
or Italy (who knows?) is a guy who'd apparently had a ticket machine installed
completely on his own and then had simply begun to show up every day,
commencing to collect and keep the parking fees, estimated at about £560
per day - for 25 years!

Assuming 7 days a week, this amounts to just over 7 million quid - and
no one even knows his name! rofl

If it's really true, don't you just love it!

There was a similar story going around when I was younger. In the summer season, there were 'roaming conductors' on the Blackpool trams who would hop on/off trams to cope with collecting fares from the numerous passengers. An ex-employee had a ticket machine and endless rolls of tickets, went 'freelance' and made a bloody fortune every summer for who knows how long. A load of old bks if you ask me.

I had just moved into a little village in Kent. I was working in the front garden one day when a chap in a crombie introdced himself as the rep of the Hextable, Swanley Village, and Crockehill Residents' Association. He had leaflets and everything. I paid my £1 for 1 year's membership, pointed out that I would be at the meeting a month later, and off the chap went.

He was well spoken, seemingly well educated and very friendly. He wandered off down my road and I looked forward to the notification of the location and date of my first HSVCRA get-together. I was well pleased that we were not associating with the rather common Swanley lot.

No notification arrived of course. At a party a neighbour said how he had been stupid and had given 50p (why £1 for me?) to a bloke who, the police told him, was a conman. Given the ridicule he received from others I felt it best not to mention my association with the chap.

He evidently had lots of pre-cons and was easy enough to trace. He had tried the same thing all over the south of England, at least according to the paper. There was, the police felt, every likelihood that he had committed many more offences, given his lifestyle, but that victims were often reluctant to come forward.

I was called to a theft of car. The chap selling it had made arrangements for one chap to view it. The bloke said all the right things, kicked the tyres and asked if he could take it for a test drive. Owner sat in the passenger seat and the potential purchaser drove him around and eventually into Stanmer Park on the outskirts of Brighton and well away from a telephone - this around 1985, pre mobiles.

They got out, examined the car, the purchaser got back in while the other bloke was looking at the damaged tyre the chap had pointed out and simply drove away.

I forget the car but it was a pricey 2-year old.

I did an MO check but, believe it or not, it came back with too many hits to be useful.

Similar one I had heard a few years ago was a guy who rented a warehouse and printed up some official looking paperwork and went round collecting old tyres and charging garages to take them away for correct disposal etc.

Anyway he was simply stacking them up in the warehouse and when it was full simply did a bunk with what would have been a hefty amount of cash.

Never really known if it was urban legend or not.

I suppose that's a sort of reverse "long firm" scam.

I realised that from the 'google snopes' reply by 'lone wolf'.

The 'tyre' story on the other hand does strike true.
