Looks like the Conservatives are taking the long awaited and wished for harder line with the EUSSR,

The EU Commission accounts have not been cleared by the auditors for over ten years. It's a disgrace.

And what impact will Osborne's foot stamping have?

Hopefully it'll encourage other EU countries to question the accounts and get something done about the EUSSR. Have any other major members refused to endorse the accounts yet?

It's not foot stamping. The EU accounts have been a little conceit that all of the EU countries have gone along with because it was too hard to fix. Like the structural problems of the Euro.

By doing this Osborne is making a rather clever statement that the UK is not going to stand for continental silliness any more.

With any luck he'll use it to renegotiate a parity with what comes back in comparison to our payments.

The Swedish and Dutch have also refused to endorse the accounts, adding additional pressure for the EU for the financial reform that may well result in a reduction in dishonest distribution in grant funding and hopefuly get it to a state where it does have signed off audited accounts . . . .

I recall a few years ago the commission sacked the chief auditor (I think that's what her title was) on the grounds that she wanted to bring in more effective software and there were many who did not want to see that happen.

It is a disgrace that these accounts have gone unaudited for so long and worse that many seem to take a vociferous stand when anything is suggested to put the situation right.

Perhaps this says more about Europe than we care to really consider.

I'd rather we kept our annual EU subsidy than have a little hissy fit in the corner.

Spectacular! You are aware that the UK is a nett contributor to the EU aren't you?

Or are you implying that the EU will withold even the meagre crumbs it gives us if we don't continue to turn a blind eye to blatant fraud?
