BBC NEWS said:
Gavin Collier, 20, of Neath, died when the driver of a car he was considering buying crashed into a parked car while travelling at up to 75mph.

Earlier the court heard Morris was trying to sell the car with a faulty shock absorber which he had been previously warned about in an MoT test.

Prosecutor James Jenkins told the court Morris hit speeds of 75mph as he was trying to manoeuvre around a sweeping left hand bend on a country road in Tenby.

Trainee mechanic Morris lost control and crashed into a parked car killing Mr Collier instantly.
regardless of the crash, how does speeding at 75MPH in a 50 help sell your car, it would make me think it was thrashed and therefore I would walk away, sadly this chap didn't get chance to walk away frown

As well as the minor point of crap driving and a faulty car...

Very Tragic! frown

I remember this when it first happened as the car in the accident used to belong to a mates other half. In fact I remember the day we put the wheels that are on it in the picture on the car after faffing about getting the right spacers for it as they were Ford offset.

That is a tragic story. However the title you gave the thread made me snort out a little laugh.

Bizarre. Part of why I bought my current car is that the owner drove it like an old granny, so I knew it had never been thrashed.

Regarding the case, don't you love it when it's not enough that these idiots kill someone, but they lie about it afterwards and try to wriggle out of their responsibilities.

I'm guessing he wasn't the sharpest tool in the box, if you'd pardon the pun.

He was found guilty about 3 weeks ago but I'm sure the sentencing took place this week.

Very sad story.

Indeed one of my old ones was wheeled out of a carpeted garage, warmed up for 10 mins and then driven like a granny.

It's a strange thing though when selling a performance car. You have to open the taps up at some point to show them what it's all about, but you also can't thrash it.

The one in the OP seems to be some kind of Peugeot 106... is it mildly barried or some kind of fancy fast one?

I seem to recall one of the prospective buyers of my scoob held onto the door handle all the way around my improvised demonstration route, with occaisional grabs of the seat with the other hand during some of the quicker moments.

Never heard back from him for some reason!

Series 2 Rallye, probably slightly modified as most have been but a fairly rare lightweight gti special edition. Desirable car. Both men were fairly well known on some peugeot forums I think. Sad story.

Must have been a terrible trainee not to have fixed that shock before trying to sell it

Ditto that when I was selling the Griffith.

Never really quite sure what prospective purchasers want; why they're buying a performance car and what it is they're looking for in one. (I think in at least one case, traction control was added to the list of what they did, subsequently, want. biggrin)

Sad state of affairs I agree but to hijack the thread a little the story was on the bbc Welsh news again last night and the presenter seemed to play on the fact that the driver was a "rally enthusiast" meaning the sport not the model. Annoyed me somewhat as the tone of voice and wording made me think the bbc were trying to suggest that all rally enthusiasts are nutters and a danger to others!

Reasonable use of performance in a safe manner, with some mechanical sympathy.

In a TVR the above can be achieved with the passenger grabbing at the seat thumbup

And I know this happened a while back, but couldn't find a thread on PH and thought it deserved one given the nature of the incident! Sorry I'm a bit slow! hehe

"faulty shock absorber which he had been previously warned about in an MoT test."

Isn't this an advisory? Otherwise it would have failed.

I doubt this was the major contributing factor to the crash just a bit of slack journalism.

Driving too fast and inexperience are the biggest factors IMO.
