Three-time F1 world champion Sir Jackie Stewart has taken ill onboard a flight to the UK from the Geneva motor show.

The 72-year-old was given first aid by stewardesses after complaining of chest pains and the plane was met by paramedics upon landing in the UK at around 12.45pm local time.

The pilot asked passengers if there were any medical personnel on the plane, stating that there was a medical emergency.

Autoblog journalists were on the plane - they report that Stewart got up to go to the toilet during the flight but never returned to his seat.

He was sitting up and conscious as the plane landed, but was taken away by ambulance for further medical examination.

Stewart's son is on his way to visit him in hospital and has told the BBC: "I've just spoken to him. He seemed absolutely fine. He did pass out and as a precaution was taken to hospital. Obviously we need to establish what happened. Hopefully he'll be checked over and it will be nothing more sinister."

He was accompanied on the plane with a woman Autoblog understands is his wife.

Happens to old people when they pee. It drops the blood pressure and can cause them to go feint.

Also heart attack or angina is quite common when people 'exert' themselves on the loo.
hope this is not the case...

F1 drivers never change - so the stewardess was giving him a hand in the loo & he passed out? He should know better...

Did I read the article correctly?

Hope he is ok, too many of these guys were taken too young via the sport, hope the remaining ones live to ripe old ages, he always comes across really well, if a little grumpy sometimes biggrin

I hope all is well with him - which I'm sure he will be but forgive me for being dumb here, blood pressure drops from pee-ing? Angina and heart attacks from straining too hard on the loo?!!!

God help him at Hillingdon Hospital. Whatever he went in with, he'll come with that plus MRSA and food poisoning.

Get well soon Jackie (from the boy who was too shy to ask for your autograph at Beaulieu motor museum in 1973)

One of the good guys in my experience, I was recently on a flight with him to Inverness and was reminded how down-to-earth he is. All the best...
