Title shamelessly taken from the BBC News website - but the Lib Dems slumping that far back must have been a bit of a shock.

However, it was the soundbite from the new MP that irritated me - him saying "This will send the strongest message to David Cameron, etc".

What bloody message is/was that:

"This safe Labour seat has been won by, er, Labour - Surprise"

The only surprise is that Anybody else bothered to turn up to vote for someone else!

What would you expect a new MP to say?

The first opportunity to judge the standings of the parties will come at the local elections.

And that message is that people in Barnsley are too stupid to vote.

Q. How do you get out of the financial sthole that this country is in?

A. Vote in the vile criminals that got us there in the first place.

That's pretty much it. And is just about exactly what Tim Farron said too.

Barnsley is the sort of place the Tories need to be eradicating, and if they are feeling pain at the moment that's a good thing.

Well there's a surprise, PH in knee jerk and offensive posts about Barnsley. Frankly some of you give this place a bad name.

Let's face it, Labour could put up a dried cow pat wearing a red rosette and it would get returned to Parliament in Barnsley. Can't beat 'em then... hehe

Interesting that UKIP was second but no real gain from the utter collapse of the Coalition vote.

Party 2010 Gen Election Position 2011 By-election Position
Lab 17487 1 14724 1
LibDem 6394 2 1012 6
Con 6388 3 1999 3
BNP 3307 4 1463 4
UKIP 1727 5 2952 2

Clegg can watch out in Hallam come next election, he has a lot of students who live in his constituency, but many of them are still registered to vote at home. There seems to be a feeling that there will be a push to get those at uni come the next election to register to vote in Hallam and dump Clegg out on his ear.

Idiot question - what will happen with Clegg if he's voted out? Can he remain in his current "position"?

Quick move to the house of lords where he could continue in his current position. The joys of a non-elected house is that politicains don't need to bother with elections, see Mandleson.

You mean as leader of Lib Dims?

He could in theory do that from House of Lords as already mentioned but whichever LDs still got elected to Commons would then have to select their leader.

caveat: no idea what LD constitution actually says, just guessing.

So in one sentance you have a go at us for saying that people in Barnsley are to stupid to have the vote, that they have no understanding of what Labour did to this country and that they are voting Labour cause their Dad voted llabour and theire grandad etc....

And in your next sentance you basicly prove us correct in our opinions.

Thank you smile

I wonder how many people didn't vote because they figured that it wasn't worth it as it's a safe seat?

I live in a safe Labour area and I voted for someone else on principle - I do not, however, truly believe that every vote counts.

A pathetically low turnout and no surprise who wins a safe seat... It's no indication of anything.

It has givven the BBc a collective chubby. I woke up to their barely contained excitement on the Today programme and now Radio 5 are giving various Barnsley residents the chance to witter on about Thatcher and coal mines.

It was on Radio 4 that I heard it - I found myself shouting at the Radio. Again.

Shocking collapse in the LIBDEM vote. They're finished as a party now.

This is on the Jeremy Vine show now, the usual affair of people rubbishing the cuts (but not offering an alternative)
Surprisingly one person is talking sense, I wonder how much airtime he'll get?

The last Labour MP in Barnsley was jailed for 12 months for expenses fraud, correct?

I'm not saying that Labour were the only party that did this, but Jesus fking Christ... Are the people of Barnsley fking thick? Vote in an independent, don't reward the party of the crook that was just sent to prison.
