They want to be the greenest government ever? At what cost, exactly?

One of the goals is to protect us from energy price shocks. Amicable goal, hope it pays off.

As do we all but relying on wind energy isn't really going to work. Ask the Danes who produce 20% of their electricity from wind and as a result have to import a good chunk of their electricity whilst exporting what their windfarms have produced at a loss.

Hopefully this'll just end up as a way to positively spin a massive new nuclear build.

All you need to know..

"The draft Plan highlights three key changes that will be required across the UK economy, including the way electricity is generated, the way homes and businesses are heated and the way people travel."

I am particularly alarmed at -
1. no public money for nuclear (what private firm will stump up that kind of cash with reward decades away?)
2. Carbon capture relied on - I don't think the concept has even been demonstrated yet has it?
3. Old power stations will be de-commissioned regardless - brave move and a sure election-loser so expect u-turns there (or buy candles)

If only the same effort could go towards getting us a productive nation again.....

They could start by making sure it's all wired up properly.

2. Carbon capture relied on - I don't think the concept has even been demonstrated yet has it?No, it's been fiddled with at an experimental level, but no large scale applications seem to be in planning let alone building
3. Old power stations will be de-commissioned regardless - brave move and a sure election-loser so expect u-turns there (or buy candles) EDF hope to extend the existing licences on their nukes for another decade, so for Hunterston that would be about 2025. The safety case is straightforward enough, the question is whether it can be done economically(in other words, EDF would like a fixed tariff for its electrons)

If only the same effort could go towards getting us a productive nation again.....

Get rid of what? The article is almost content-free, and I suspect the policy will be too. Not to mention the total absence of money for any of these schemes; close examination will probably reveal that they will be existing NeuArbeit greenbks with a new label and no new money. I'll panic if the economy picks up and they have some real money to splash about.

Cameron was always spouting his 'Green Rhetoric'.

I don't think people voted for the Tories in order to prevent this green movement. I think you'll find most people voted Tory to get rid of the 'incompetent Socialist nut jobs' that were Nu-Labour.
