Anyone who knows me or has read my posts on PH will recognise I am seriously concerned about the steady, relentless and continuous collapse of out Economy which I think has now gone on for over 100 years.

My primary concern economically, is the UK.

We are going to Hell in a Handcart. Steady relentless fall.

I am happy to help others but charity begins at home and the way our economy is going we will need it.

As I understand Economics, there is a fundamental difference between the effect of expenditure on investment in the Economy, as, for example, in long term fuel generation projects, and simple consumption where we just buy lots of goodies frequently from abroad, and use them for short term gain with no long term benefit and even further costs in disposal of the used product.

I believe our politicians are missing a real trick here and we need to alter this effect immediately.

I propose we build massive Hydro Electric schemes over the Bristol Channel, Wash, Firth of Forth and Clyde etc and therefore harness the power of the sea AND create long term assets which offer dividends in terms of low cost energy for generations to come.

In doing this we could limit the tendering of ALL bidders to employing only UK based labour, only UK produced materials etc etc within the contracts all of which would generate a HUGE number of jobs IN THE UK. All the Generators could be made in the UK all the reinforcing in the UK and so on.

This would surely create a rise in Employment a substantial rise in the Construction Industry AND THE TAXPAYER HAS AN ASSET ACTUALLY WORTH SOMETHING AT THE END OF THE PROGRAM.

I may not have expressed myself well but I hope the focus of my thought is clear.

Invest Taxpayers money in the UK, for the UK create an asset with LONG TERM BENEFITS, in the UK and NOT simply squander the money as we now seem to be doing.

My example of Hydro electricity is ONLY an example.

Other investments could be equally rewarding.

Having seen the HOOVER Dam in America and the huge boost this gave to the US in the last depression and the huge benefit this still creatres today 70 years later and the huge area of irrigatioin this created offerring vast areas of fertile land, I think this is a winner.

ITS GOT TO BE BETTER THE 3,500,000 on the dole with NO RETURN WHATSOEVER.

And it is relatively simple to set up. Our politicians might even manage it.

Does anyone agree? Has anyone any alternative suggestions? Are my economic suggestions achievable? Have I missed something?

Illegal under EU competition law. So your first problem is to find a way to get us out of the EU.

And then you'll need to find jobs for the migrant workers from the UK who are currently enjoying their gainful employment in foreign climes - quiet a few of them on PH i think. Tit for tat, and all that.

Btw are you Gordon Brown?

Surely if he was he would be getting Mr King to do another £400 billion of QE a year and creating 2m new public sector jobs with said money printy printy?

Please don't, I rather like wearing shorts all year round.

More seriously, the UK does need to do more for itself, securing it's own power and water supplies should be key, followed by putting the workshy back into work. Spending billions on welfare with no ROI is killing us economically. It just means rising taxes and falling quality of life.

The movement of labour between countries isn't entirely dependent on those countries merging together into a hideous beaurocratic edifice.

Even if we use them as landfill it would be an improvement.

Harold Wilson tried his "I'm backing Britain" scam in the 1960's. And look what happened after that...

It's a total waste of time.

hardly a total waste of time Andy

From being a natural born Socialist Wilson managed to turn me into someone who

a: would NEVER vote for any party Wilson "might be a part of"

And

b: Someone who thinks carefully about where to vote at any election

As for the OP

I would worry, but...

Not a Dam this time, but build 3 or 4 nuclear power stations.

(Caveat: There may be a flaw in that plan).

Yes be like the french, sign up and agree to abide by the rules and then ignore them completly and make sure only french vehicles are bought by the goverment etc etc.

We need an economy built on a mix, manufacturing, small business growth, financial and service industries. New technologies also need to be helped to grow.

Cut red tape and make work pay for those who can but won't work.

I agree with this.

My concern is that by creating huge economic projects be they Nuclear Hydroelectric or otherwise then providing they do actually work there is far more to be gained from this expenditure than continuing with Millions on the dole.

By paying out dole in the UK we encourage expenditure on imports.

Sounds daft but the fact is most food is imported. Think of the examples of Aldi, Lidle, Nessa etc all heavily selling imported foodstuffs particularly to dole recipients in the UK.

Unless we create employment and the Construction Industry is the quickest way, we can moan, hand wring and sob but UNEMPLOYMENT WILL NOT CURE ITSELF.

The UK has to create a situation where people do not want to be unemployed and then CREATE THE OPPORTUNITIES that will offer them employment.

Fact is we have allowed a situation to exist where many people cannot find a job who would LIKE to work.

If we create real worthwhile jobs, not training exercises to massage the figures for political purposes we can THEN turn our attention to pushing the unwilling into work.

BUT WE MUST create jobs FIRST within the UK.
