Or so screams the headline on the front page of BBC news.

What utter drivel, they are of course discussing shotgun licences but headline in it in such a way that it makes the reader think that kids are being given weapons from the state or something. Apart from the fact that only 13 kids have been given the licence in the past 3 years makes this a complete non-story and yet the Beeb decide it's worth a misleading headline and story.

Their standards of news journalism are particularly sloppy and over-sensationalist now, this story and the Tsunami coverage has really shown that IMO

Another attempt at control-freakery by the BBC Islingtonites?

I thought the same as you; what a non-story.

It seems that our national news service exists in the same alternate universe as our politicians.
Now all we need to do is find some way of cutting off all contact between their universe and ours and the world will be a happy place.

Agreed. More left-wing sensationalist arse from the Socialist Republic that is the BBC. How on Earth is a child's age relevant when shooting under supervision? I fail to see what point the article is actually trying to make.

Well - I don't know if it was purely a a result of the complaint that I sent them but I see they have tempered their headline a little, but it's still pretty leading "Under-10s cleared to use shotguns"

:Sigh:

I can see the Mail Headlines already. rolleyes

Fact is, there are plenty of "kids" in rural areas who will be using shotguns and driving tractors on their farms before they're 10. I first used a .410 when I was about 11 but was using air guns for pest control (with supervision I may add) before that.

The BBC is becoming more 'Daily Mail' by the day. It makes me fking livid.
We are forced to pay for this crap.

The story behind that article is:

"Forever children have been allowed to fire shotguns if they are adequately supervised by adults".
Nothing 'new' has happend to make it 'news'.
Why on earth is the BBC printing such st? We can all buy tabloids if we want them.

And many urban sun readers only contact with guns is when a local scrote turns over the offie, they will scream for tighter legislation on guns when the problem is people.
I was shooting 20 bore at competitive level when 12 years old and have unnacountably failed to point a gun at a person during my life.
My son is a keen target shooter with an air rifle and a bow and has never abused the privilege, next year he will be taught how to use and maintain a shotgun.
Inner city twonks will never understand the countryside.

FWIW here's the reply I received yesterday:

BBC News Online Complaints said:
Dear Reader, thank you for your e-mail. The headline on this story has been changed and we are sorry that the initial version was misleading.

Thank you for raising the issue with us, and kind regards, BBC News website team

I heard this and that it was "as a result of a freedom of information act enquiry by the BBC".
So why use our licence fee to drum up such non stories that are hardly in the public interest, I value the BBC for programme making but the research end of the news team needs a big shake up IMO.
What a shock a youngster in a rural area has a shotgun, surely that is responsible behaviour more so even than borrowing a parents gun as they are exposed to and learn the whole process and the responsibility that goes with lawful gun ownership and use.

Similar story to me. I must have been about 10 or 11 when I first fired a shotgun on a schoolfriends farm. His dad taught us how to use it safely and was always with us while we were shooting stuff. Looking back, driving the tractors and playing on top of stacked hay bales was probably more dangerous.

I used to walk around Bisley with a holstered revolver - don't think I was much older than 10 at the time. But then back in these dark times you could also buy a 44 Magnum and have it delivered to your house by Royal Mail!

No one cared.

No one died.

How incorrect is that headline? Shotguns do not have rifled barrels and are therefore not Rifles!

I also doubt the police were giving weapons to children, but rather allowing them to use a shotgun under supervision!
