A depressing day indeed.

Sympathy to the fella's family and friends.

Sadly, its politically expedient to ignore the facts of what's still going on in the six counties.

I think the point is you'll hear of soldiers being killed in Afghanistan in every paper, but closer to home, there are still terrorist actions and car bombs that barely get a mention.

Apart from this story being the lead item on every UK news channel, and practically every online paper.

Yes this one is because unfortunately a young man has lost his life. How many of the other bombs etc have you heard about recently? I'll bet its not many...

Actually it's been ramping up in NI over the last couple of months, I can remember two or three devices getting defused.

It's not really terrorism any more either, just basic organised crime. These scum are no longer even attempting to achieve political aims - the Unionists and Republicans are working together to smuggle diesel in from the Republic.

I'm not sure I'd called planting booby traps organised crime - its def, terrorism. I'm not naive enough to think its all stopped, but I thought until recently that my little country might actually have stood a chance. Unfortunately, there are still f**kwits who think that bullets and explosives are the way to get what they wantbanghead

There has been dozens of attempts to kill with a booby trap bomb by these "dissidents" for the last few years now. A couple of officers have lost limbs in recent times.

Today, a young 25 year old man lost his life.

RIP Constable Kerr..............

Thoughts with your family and friends.

As I said, there's no political motivation any more. The big problem is that the former terrorists now run the crime in Ireland Mafia style. By Mafia style I mean they've watched The Godfather and Scarface. I doubt anyone will "claim" this one for themselves either.

My friends in N.I have often described the terrorism as more like organised crime under the flag of patriotism from both sides.

Indeed. The EU has meant that there really isn't as much need for a united Ireland any more - it's not like the border is closed or anything. They started off fighting for something, then they were just fighting for fighting, and now it seems they are only blowing up the police and the army to try and keep PSNI on a war footing, and avoid them turning into a regular police force, with the capacity and capability for investigating their criminal empire.

I'm at a loss as to how that would work? Policing is policing shirley? Do PSNI still routinely go armed?

I think people are slightly misinformed here.. The 'fuel smuggling' boat sailed long ago, as a whole that's finished up. You're getting confused with the PIRA who fought a sustained war against the British government / forces for the guts of 30 years. Then came stalemate and the ceasefire and the 'disbandment' if you will of the PIRA. since then many dissident groups have formed and pulled off a few stunts but they are no where near the capabilities of the PIRA's.

Basically what I'm saying is that the IRA who carried out this bomb today and the IRA Who you refer to as only in it for the money are two completely separate groups.

May the victim RIP.

But this was obviously carried out but cuddly 'dissidents' who have nothing whatsoever to do with 'terrorists'. I mean how could they, they don;t even have beards.

Yes the PSNI are still routinely armed - They've never stopped being under threat from these bds

"Basically what I'm saying is that the IRA who carried out this bomb today and the IRA Who you refer to as only in it for the money are two completely separate groups."

Thats the biggest load of brown smelly stuff I've read for a while. Yes the IRA/INLA of old have a cease fire, and decommisioned their weapons, but these people didn't just pop out of the woodwork after the Good Friday Agreement. The hierarchy of whichever group did this is based around ex IRA members! To say that these people haven't got the capability the IRA had - tell that to Mrs Kerr who is waking up today without her son!

I'm shocked that people on here seem to be trying to say these terrorists are actually more like organised criminals. Yes they are involved in organised crime, but most organised criminals don't indiscriminately kill police for no reason other than they were an officer. I'll put money on this being the work of the Real IRA or Oglaigh na hEireann - thye've been building up to something like this for a while frown

Sorry - I'm a bit sensitive/emotive to this murder due to my family so might have rambled / been less clear than I could have been.
I'm not denying the paramilitary groups are into their organised crime (I left NI just after the GFA, I grew up in the troubles, and have had the misfortune to seen first hand the effects of it The groups have always been into organised crime -drugs, property, fuel etc as has already been mentioned). What I'm objecting to is the organised crime aspect apparently now includes blowing up a yong police officer, who was only out to do his best for BOTH sides of the community.

A further point is that the likes of Adams and McGuiness et-al, have no authority or respect from the "youngsters" who see them as traitors who have sold out for their own advancement.
